what format are the video files when you transfer from the camcorder to the computer? are they strait avi or mpeg4?

cuz i currently have a sony dvd-cam and that records to mpeg2. while i like mpeg2 cuz of the quality ...piece of #%@$ to edit with in premiere or anything else for that matter. so im lookin at getting a miniDV cam for recording/editing purposes and just use the dvd-cam for just a ...random pass-around-the-boat camera.

yah, DVD-cams are not that great right now...and probably will never get better. I doubt they will spend money reasearching them further. DVD-Cams are more aimed at people shooting there kids playing soccer, then being able to copy the disk and send it of to Grandpa and Grandma.
Im not entierly sure, because i havent used premeir in like 2 years. but i belive that when you capture in premeir it captures the video into a .WMV

JamesWatts, Premier captures the video in .AVI format when you use any type of camera (MiniDV, HI8, etc). Except of course for the DVD cams.

Also make sure that you stay away from the MicroDV cams because they will do the same thing as the DVD cams.

MiniDV cams save their video in DV format, which I believe is uncompressed, raw video (approx 250 MB/min). What format it imports into depends on the program you are using to import.

haha ...well if money were no object to me, id get one of those $2000 + cameras. but since im on a limited budget ....i was thinkin no more than 700. cuz i spent 9 on the dvd-cam, and i dont think i can fork over that much for ANOTHER camera. plus i do wanna get a nice digital camera too. but ill just have to see how money is as next summer rolls around.

you should look into the Panasonic PS-GV120 - it is a consumer camera that has 3 CCD's on it. It is only $650 and it creates very nice video
