Depends on your taste. The Nautiques are steep and solid. I don't know about the Malibus but all the ones I've been behind are rampy.

I would probably go with a Nautique in those ranges. It will put a nice wake when weighted.

nautique this nautique that
Free your mind's people, to much subjectivity round here.

I think someone should have to ride behind all "wakeboard" boats before he/she is allowed to spurt out some "this boat is better" comment.

I've yet to ride behind a "wakeboard" boat that didn't throw a great wake when weighted. The rest is just personal preference.

If you can get a good nautique 2001, get it. The only difference between the 2001, and barefoot 2001 is the deadrise at the transom is a few degrees higher, and the hull is 2 inches deeper(plus many of them had a 454) I have never seen the wake of one, but a guy on my local lake has one and I have heard the wake is awesome behind the barefoot. I just got an 87 2001, but haven't ridden behind mine yet

Started out on an 88 2001 nautique and lets just say it was as good if not better than most boats I've been behind IMO. You can't go wrong with either one. The Barefoot has a slightly different hull and has the 454 as stated previously. I just wanted to back it up. Both are killer w/ 500lbs in the rear 250-300 in the nose and 4 dudes. Anyone that knows anything about boarding will tell you the same. The wakes from these will send you flying. The barefoot just is not as steep from what I remember but my buddy didn't run the same weight config that I ran that could have been the difference.

Just have the tranny checked out good. With weight in there you don't want to have one that is running on it's last leg.

I had a 76 Mastercraft stars and stripes a few years ago. What a pile of dung, but let me tell you, the wake was sweet. It might have been caused by the large chunks of fiberglass that would peel off the bottom at high speeds. those were the good ol days....

that is like asking which girl has the nicest hooters. It is personal preference and weighting.

it is personal pref. but hitting an older nauti. is like jumping on a trampoline. MAD pop...... nauti have the most prefered wake out there. Not everybodies pref. but most peoples, so if you have a malibu or master craft or what ever else just deal with the fact that nauti's make the steepest most vert. wake with the most pop and damn it, thats what the majority of riders like.

The Naut 2001 definitely rocks, especially for an older boat. I think it actually has a better wake than my '98 Air because of its steepness. Although, I don't know why, but hitting DUs on the Air seemed a lot easier.

What sort of price range do you guys find these boats in? Give it to me in US$ and I'll convert it myself.

Thanks!

for an 84-89 ski nautique 2001 you're probably looking at anywhere from $4,000-$11,000. depending on the condition it's in. there was a real nice nautique 2001 on here a while back for around $10,000. the nautiques are most likely gonna have the highest resale.

Wow thats not too bad, thats about $20,000 AUD, I could afford that. The problem is, they don't have any of these boats in Australia!

All this Nautique crap makes me sick. These older boats all do about the same when weighted similarly. They were all designed to have great ski wakes, that is designed with similar characteeristics. Go for the one that is in the best shape and has the features you like. Stay away form any with a 454, they were gas hogs and did not have much better performance. Many had heating problems. Just check them all out and see which one suits you.

The Bu sunsetter would be a better boat then the Bu skier though. It will settle down a little better in the water.

It is funny how in other areas of this forum people rip on the Wedge for making the wake steep but then go and brag about how Nautique is great because they have a steep wake. Most of the boats make good wakes, it is all in what your used to.

I think the nautique is a better choice because of its durability and craftsmanship as compared to other boats 20 years ago. I find the wake on these boats to be the biggest fot their time and I have ridden behind old master crafts and malibus. I think the reason is that nautique had the deepest hull. IF you just look at pictures mastercrafts and malibus were extremly flat which was nice for skiing in smooth water, not for wakeboarding in choppy water. Also the 2001 nautiques were made to be good 3 event waterski boats. Which meant they were supposed to have a decent wake at slow speeds ( you can find this in any old brochures, I have the one for my old nautique). By, the way I am not trying to knock anybodys boat, as long as you are having fun and like your boat thats what matters most!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Mullet Man...people dont rip on the wedge for making the wake steep...that isn't the problem. The problem is that with the wedge down the boat handles like an articulated lorry with a full load of logs.

And while I agree that nowadays boat choice is all about personal pref...as far as slightly older boats go Nautiques tend to have it over the competition, primarily because you get steep well formed reliable wakes when they are weighted

I would have to disagree. I can whip up on my firneds X-10 with my wedge down and 1500 in ballest when he only has the factory ballast. I doubt that many people have really honestly compared the difference between a boat with the wedge and one with straight ballast. I might say that the only difference is a little bit of turning resistance to the left.

I think many of the old boats were designed to do the same thing, flat ski wake or no wake. The old nautiques and mc as well as a cast of others were a bit smaller hull designes. it takes less weight to get those boats to throw a large wake. mosst well not compete with the pro v drive boats, at least not yet for us ( but we have ordered two 750lb sacs to add to the picture) we had 2 350lb sacs, and 500lbs of sand..... we will see. I love my old mc and we had the wake very firm and rampy. I have lliked at the CC boats abd they look identicle to me. don't want to start an argument but if there is a real difference it got past me. I also asked some pro riders as well they said the old boats are fairly close......

now sport nautique vdrive thats another story!!

Doesn't this question ever get OLD?
At least this guy asked specifically about certain boats....

I think Richie said it best, unless you have ridden behind ALL of them please don't waste your time giving us your one-sided opinion...

the reason the nautique has a better was is just like mk said, they were made for 3 event boats. correct craft thought that their boats would have more appeal if they not only did good with the slalom, but when slowed down, would be good for the trick skiiers. if you look at the back of the boats(mc, cc, bu) from the 80's, the bu and mc are close to completely flat at the transom, but the cc's have a v-shape in the middle of the transom, helping them displace more water. I'll also say, the cc don't have as good of a slalom wake as the others and that is why the 2001 hull was replaced and the newer cc ski boats don't have a hull like that.

mk, why did they need a bigger wake for the 3 events way back then?

because trick skiiers like wakes to be a bit bigger, they don't need them as high as we use them but they do like wakes that are larger than a slalom wake

I've been behind about a dozen boats and there is nothing like the crafted wakes on the newer boarding focused boats, hell some are even intiimidating with 1500 lbs of weight. The older Naut 2001 does really well with a little weitht because its has about a 60" beam, vs the newer boats with 90" beams. It rides deeper and with a little weight even deeper again = steeper and taller wake. I see these in the mid to late 80"s vintage around here for $6K to $10K so they are a great value if you need a good sled. Definately better than a great day at work!
