There are many that are better. What price range are you looking into? You should be able to get a really good deal on a used or even new 10D right now.

Any of the Canon DSLR's: 1D, 1D mkII, Rebel, D60, 10d and 20D are capable of taking great pictures. (D30 just doesn't have enough MP's) Pictures from a Rebel with an L series lens will look better than a 1D mkII with an El cheapo $100 lens (all other things being equal). What you're paying for with a 1 series body is the ability (read speed) to consistantly get great pictures, not miss shots and to take pro style abuse and not break. You will still be able to get great shots even with a Rebel. I'd pop for a Rebel or a used 10d and 2 or 3 great lenses before I'd buy a mkII and be forced to shoot with cheap glass if that's all the budget allowed. By the end of next year you'll be able to buy a body that's as good as a mkII for the price of a 20D. Heck the 20D is halfway there now! At that point good lenses will likely still be the same cost.
