I was out playing with my new lens the other day and I talked my soon to be wife into letting me take some pics of her. This is the first time I have really tested the iso performance on my camera and I was really happy with the results.
Here is some info on the shot
The sun had just went down and it was getting pretty dark (although you can't tell from the pic)
ISO 1250
Shutter 1/2000 sec
Aperture f1.2
Shot in raw and converted in PSCS
Lens Canon 85mm F1.2L
Available light/ no flash

I am thinking about getting a program like noise ninja to see just how good you can push low light shots and still look great.

Your wife looks hot, and that's an awesome pic.

also... that's a seriously nice camera setup.. I wish I could afford a lens like that... The lens alone is as much as my 10d body cost me.

jvanick, thanks!! I just got the lens and I think it will be the most used. It's super sharp and the bokeh is very nice. My only complaint is that it's slow focusing (even on the Mark II) and it's really heavy, especially for being so small. Other than that I really love it!

Are you showing off your new lens or your new wife? Smile

WOW 85 f1.2L - most folks are raving about the 85 f1.8 let alone that lens. At 2000th of a second you really didn't need ISO1250 (but I know you were testing). Just goes to show what you'll be able to do with a super fast lens like that! That's supposed to be "the portrait lens" for a 1.3X crop and I can see why.

Keep posting your test shots with the future wife - we won't complain!

RD, I wanted a very small DOF so I shot wide open.

Here is another shot taken right after the other shot. I know it's a kinda korney pose but we were just playing around.
Also shot wide open and ISO 1250.

And here are a few more that were shot a little earlier. All regular ISO Funny poses here too but just playing around and having a good time.
Thanks for looking.

The detail in the stone in the 2nd from last shot and the color/contrast in all of them is amazing. That is a very nice lens. I see what you were doing with the DOF shooting wide open, my only point was if you're metering 1/2000th at f1.2 ISO1250 you would have metered at 1/500th (or thereabouts) at ISO200 wide open also (still plenty of shutter speed still for a solid pic.). Hardly a big deal here since ISO1250 is obvously very clean. I tried the demo of Noise Ninja but everything I've shot so far doesn't have enough noise for me to see any difference before/after. Figured I'd save the $ at this point.

How about a couple of REALLY high ISO shots - 3200! First one is Ricky G shot just after sunset up in Portland this summer, and the second was taken about an hour after sunset in Parker AZ using a Sigma fisheye lens. Both images were run thru Neat Image noise reduction.

RD, Thanks for noise ninja tip. I forgot about the demo. Maybe I should give it a try. My 717 is fully capable of noisy shots. Cool

Have you had much time to play with your 20D?

BigMac, That is one fine woman, and one fine lens you dog Laughing
Those pics are WONDERFUL to say the least, and Sharper than a Ginsu Knife.
The high iso capability of that camera/lens combo is truly amazing.
BTW, you guys don't forget "Noise Ware" it's great as well.
I'd post a high iso pic for you as well, but lately I don't seem to have any I like!

(need to get back on the water Crying or Very sad )

Bigmac:

About 700 shots so far. I just haven't seen any noise to ninja but many swear by it.

Shelby: Isn't Noiseware PC only? I'm on the Mac so it's more limited as far as what's out there. I know Neatimage is PC only.

Bill: Beautiful shots - that sunset is about as good as it gets, that's a very hard shot to get right. Did you do any blending on that or just nail it?

You guys are killing me with your great shots. Here's one from a wedding Friday night of a buddy of mine's son. This was shot using the builtin flash for fill - f4.5, 160th, ISO200, +1/3rd FEC with the 17-40L. I'm very impressed with the flash on the 20D for closeup stuff, it seems to work very well.

RD, no blending. I bracketed a few shots and chimped then made adjustments as well as playing with the levels in PS. But that shot was pretty close and required very little adjustment. That one was hand-held, 1/10, f5.6, ISO3200.

Here is the original shot, just resized for the web. Amazing how good it looks even without NR.

BillJ, haha man those shots are amazing!! I think I will buy now!!

RD, Wow very nice!! I can't believe that came from an on board flash. I think a flash will be next on my list but I.m not sure to wait for the new 580ex or just get a smokin deal on a used 550ex? Any suggestions?

BIGMAC, Very nice job with controlling the DOF that had to take some practice with a 1.2 lens, I really like the pictures for that reason!!!

BIGMAC,

I tried a 420ex with my 1D and wasn't happy at all with it. I then got a Metz54 which works great. I just switch it to A (auto) mode and fire away, doesn't matter what the camera settings are. Bad part about the Metz is cost, which is normally around $50 or so more than the 550ex. The 580 may be way better than the 550 but until they are out it's going to be hard to say. There are plenty of happy 550ex users out there but probably not with eTTL2. I'm guessing that the 580ex will be a big improvement over the 550 with eTTL2. If you can get a great deal on the 550ex used that's probably the way to go because you can always resell and not take a beating (like you probably will if you buy a new one now.)[/b]
