PostPosted: Mar 06, 2003 6:04 pm    Post subject: Avril Lavigne Reply with quote

Ok, I was watching some entertainment show yesterday and the host was interviewing Avril Lavigne. I used to like her music in the summer, and I still had some respect for her before yesterday. Now, however, I've lost all respect for that chick. I had heard that she didn't even like punk/rock music and was only making that type of music 'cause she could make $$ on it. I didn't really believe this. After the interview I saw, however, I have no doubt she is a complete poser.

The interviewer was asking her what she thought about her music being labelled as "pop" and she totally beat around the bush saying things like "I don't like that idea. I don't like pop music. What I really like is rock and I want my music to be labelled as that." The next question the dude asked was who her fav. bands are. Her response: "Oh wow. Ummmm.... I don't know... it's all over the place. I like a lot right now. Lots of rock. Ummm, yea I can't really put my finger on any, but definitely like a lot of rock." The whole time she was saying this she had her head down and her hair covering her eyes. After seeing that I was sure she knows absolutely nothing about the genre of music she claims to love. She could have thrown out a name of a band at least.

Sorry for the long post, but I was reading the poser thread in General and it came to mind. What do you all think about Avril?

ya i saw an interview of her on NBC a couple months ago, she was fidgiting the whole time, she was fidgeting so much she tied her finger to her shoe lace, it was funny, but what cracked me up the most was when she said this "ya, i know im getting more famouser" it was something along the lines of that, but it cracked me up, that she is this big star, and cant even speak correctly "famouser" she accuall said that.......i did listen to some of her stuff over the summer, but not too much anymore

i cant stand her first of all she thinks shes punk, i mean what kind of joke is that. and what i really cant stand is she uses ALOT of pitch correction in her CD. For those of you who dont know what pitch correction is, its when an artist or producer uses computers to change the pitches of their voice so that it sounds better. I REALLY CANT STAND THAT

Ya she sounds horrible every time she performs live, and its not just slowing it down or speeding it up they can actually change the pitch pretty easily without that, in the most recent rolling stones she talks about how shes so great at writing songs she could do atleast one really good one a day. But I didnt think she had any songs with good deep lyrics?

Did you see the grammy's? She had a live performance and sounded like SHeIT! I was shocked. (Not that i really listened to her music anyways). There is quite the difference between pop, rock, and punk. thta girl needs to pick one and work on making her voice one her cd, the same as her live voice.

The question is: Why the hell would anyone have respect for her in the first place? All manufactured music sucks, and she isn't any different. I think George should quit worrying about Iraq and blow the f*ck out of some record companys if he wants to stop corruption of youth....

(Do I really have to point out that this shouldn't be taken seriously?... Worryingly, I do...)

***News Flash***

Most of the music you listen to is manufactured and fake. Even the people who make records who aren't posers, are posers. The music industry decides what America will buy. Talent and image have nothing to do with it, it is all marketing. You are buying a package because some record execs have decided that's what you will buy.

Take American Idol. That is just the industry's way of rubbing all this in your face. They outright say "here are some talented people. However, only the person who we decide to make famous will become famous." If talent made people successful, than it wouldn't matter who won American Idol, would it? No.

Ok, so what bands do you think are "real?"

She orginally was a country singer and actually won a contest to sign with Shania Twain. She wasn't making any money so she decided to cash in on the wave of stuff pop punk skater crap that is everywhere. I can't wait until this time next year when it'll be "Avril who??"

My sister works at a big radio station in Denver and handles all the talent that comes through there - a pretty cool gig and she meets just about every star you can think of. She said Avril Levigne was the biggest bitch she had ever seen. Had a fan meet and greet deal and never looked up at the fans coming to get her autograph, hardly spoke to them, basically blew them off. One song with a catchy tune and she is big timing her fans?

Everyone keeps saying she sounds horrible live. I think Blink 182 has a terrible live sound that has only recently improved to acceptable levels. No here hates on them... It's mainstream it's not about sound it's about marketing.

Cameraboy:

You are delusional my friend, either that or the American music scene is worse than I imagined. Yes, most of the music you hear on the radio is 'manufactured', if by that you mean it is made to conform to what the exec's of a record company think it should sound like. Yes, a lot of bands (Including some or the bands I like) write songs specifically to shift more units. But you CANNOT apply this to every band out there. That is total bullsh*t. There are hardworking bands out there on the road every single night, playing to crowds who couldn't give a sh*t what they were listening too. These are bands who produce their own music in bedroom studios, or work shi*ty jobs to scrape together the money to use a studio. They have no one telling them what to write, and they often LOSE money on tour and when they release an EP.

You HAVE to get out on the street and hear these bands, because chances are, by the time some fuc*ing record exec has recognised their talent and served them up the lazy, top 40 listening public on a plate, they WILL have 'sold out' and started writing for the money, not for themselves.

Of course, you don't have to be a struggling artist to be a good artist (or 'real' as you put it). There are many successful bands and artists who are completely faithful to themselves and their craft. Most are in genres you probably never listen to, and therefor naming them would be useless, but here are a few of my personal favourites which you *may* have heard of:

Opeth
The butterfly Effect
Devin Townsends extended catalogue inc:
- Strapping Young Lad
- Ocean Machine
- Physicist
- Infinity
- Terria
- Accelerated Evolution
Anathema
Frankenbok
Cog
Soundgarden
etc. etc.

Now most of these bands fit into the metal/heavy alternative/rock 'genres', but that's only because that's what I have in my head at the moment (Except of course for Devin's work, which is just plain insanity set to music). There are artists in all fields who are just as great, without being guided on their career path by the almighty $$.

Basically, if you sit around and wait for music to be brought to you by radio and MTV, of course you're going to be served refried cr*p. You have to get out there, look for music yourself, buy a CD from a band you have never heard before, go to some gigs at your local live music venue and pick up some CD's there, read the liner notes on CD's and find out who influences the musicians you already love, all this sort of stuff is great, and there is nothing more rewarding than listening to a CD that you had to track down half way across the world, and knowing that nobody 'helped' you find this band, you did it all by yourself.

As someone who works hard to both promote and listen to up coming bands, I know that not EVERYBODY out there is a soulless sellout controlled by their record labels.

Anyway, let me know what you think, everyones opinion is different and they all count.

Cheers guys - CM

Guess what everybody?, what Camera is saying about music is pretty much the same for life in general. Even if you say you're independent you're most likely cashing into the accepted indepence of present American culture. Do you show your independence by covering your wakeboard in stickers? (like everyone else) By tricking out your car/boat with a dope sound system? (like everyone else) By having a punk attitude and wearing your hat backwards? (like everyone else) Avril is a poser but most people throughout the world are and I'd wager that 99% of the people on here are too. But life is fun!

SkatewakeBoarder - I don't think most bands play their songs live exactly how they are recorded... When I've seen Blink they add stuff in or change something, not because they don't remember what they wrote but because they just want to mix it up. I don't think live shows should have the songs EXACTLY the way they are on the album
