Hi asteele, first this is the boat forum, so I'm going to move this to the Newbie Questions forum.
But to answer your question, what board is it? Does it have built-in molded fins?
Most advanced riders use boards that either have very small molded-in fins, no fins at all, or very short fins. Using little or no fins means you rely on your edges more for control, which is a more correct way to ride.
However, most beginners have trouble keeping their board steady if they have no fins or very small fins. My advice would be to try using your board how it came, and as you get more comfortable to try buying smaller fins for it. _________________ Pat McCarthy |

1 fin- will feel looser in most cases (unless you have a huge like 3" inch one on each side), be more forgiving, but be less stable
2+ fins- will feel tighterin most cases if you use the fins that come stock. However, most people and pros change their finds to a smaller size. This setup will allow you to hit sliders better than huge fins like on single fin boards (no one does that anyways). It will be more reponsive (will initiate the cut faster and sooner) and overall is better IMO. |

the more fins you have, the better your board will track in the water. My Belmont 141 has three 1" fins on each end and it tracks like a train on rails. But I can take out the center fin and it give me a more advanced setup.
