I had always thought I was supposed to aim for 60 fps, and the best I can get so far, from my Sony Digital 8mm, hooked up with firewire, is 30 fps. It looks decent but I'm thinking it dosent appear to be as many frames as the viewfinder is producing...

Should I be aiming for 60, or am I just fooling myself?

Thanks,
Erik

30 fps is ntsc standard for digital video. i dont believe you can capture at a different rate to your computer than 30.

Erik-
Your computer might show the video that is being imported at a lower frame rate than 30 fps. For example, I can watch the view being imported @ low/med/high quality. If it still looks crummy after you've imported it and watching it off your hard drive, then you've got issues.

I was looking JVC GR-HD1 and the specs had this info in there:

Code:

Format             i.LINK IEEE 1394   Component
======             ================   =========
720x480p / 60 fps  480p / 59.94       720p / 60 fps HD only

Is this a "scam" or is it really a usable 60 fps? I haven't looked into it much but that would be really cool if you could shoot 60 fps since the slo-mo when you put it back to 30 fps would be so much better.

And as for the view finder, my digicam can only record at 30fps, which is normal butt the view finder does go at 60fps.

That would be nice though for slow-mo. Smile

The HD is a true 60fps. It's High Definition. That's the only HD camera in it's price range right now, but it's supposed to be good. I think you have to go through a bunch of crap to edit it, but it's supposed to be good. We shot Downside uP with a GL2 and XL1s which both shoot 30fps. Every miniDV camera except the HD1 shoots 30. Yes, be happy. A lot of producers are using the panny DVX100 now, and it looks great. It will shoot 30 or 24p.
