What would be a good video camera to shoot wakeboarding. I have been been using my parents but I don't think it is really that good. Also I don't know that much about video cameras so what would be good things to look for in one.

right now we have a digital JVC but I don't think it is that great. Also I saw a Sony handicam that said it stablizes pictures, is that something that I would want to look more into.

I don't really have a price range but I don't want to pay a ton so that one Zach M, posted is out Very Happy

nick e[V]ans, a good camera, but I don't think it's in his budget. We've used the pd150's at work. It's a nice camera, but I hate how it's weighted. The lens is heavy as hell. Otherwise it does a great job.

matt1808, you would probably be best suited going to a store like Best Buy or Circuit City. Sony makes good consumer mini-dv cams. I've had good results when using their cheaper end cameras (around $500-700).

Hehe... PD-150... I guess it's an ALRIGHT camera... Mr. Green
The DVX-100A is a joy to use. Love that camera. I wish I had lots and lots of cash laying around...

I'm not helping at all am I?

I really like the Panasonic GS-120. It is a small MiniDV camera but has 3CCD's so it gives really good quality - people have really commented on how the picture looks. You may want to look into that one. I bought it for about $650.

I've got a question. I don't know much about current video camera technology so....

Is the JVC GR-HD1 a 100% bona fide HD camera? I noticed that it's only around $3K but I thought HD video cost $20K or more. So is there a catch?

The GR-HD1 is a good starting point for the movement of pro-sumer cams to HD, but it's going to be a few more years before we see anything really worth while. Plus it only a 1 CCD chip.... If I'm paying that much I want all 3 CCDs!

Sony's new HD cam is the DCR-PC109 which is due out later this year. http://www.i4u.com/article1467.html

For a good camera on a tight budget check out the Sony TRV-900. Back in day they went for $2500, but now you can pick up a used one for $700-900.

Other than 16 mm, you'll find that most people are using either the Panasonic DVX100a, sony PD-150/170, TRV-900, DCR-VX2000/VX2100, or the Cannon XL1. Of course these all range from $2000 - $3500

I just got the $450 Sony DV from Walmart. Its nice enough, plugs right into the laptop for capture and stuffs. Flip out touch screen, a few little effects built into it. And it didnt cost enough to scare me into not taking it on the boat.

I agree! We got one at work a little over a week ago and I'm in heaven after using the pd150's. It feels like a feather after lugging around the front-heavy sony's. The 24 fps is also a cool feature.
