| Hi, my parents boat is a 97 wellcraft eclipse 215 with a 5.7 liter V8. We are having problems getting the boat in and out of gear, the throttle is really tough to move from nuetral to forward or reverse, sometimes it is fine, and others it is really hard. I was wondering if you all had any suggestions to help. |

Also follow the cable from the carb back to the leaver, particularly in the bends
If you see a bind or kink, work it loose / free it |

Hey elecracr,
As chaz28o, says, inspect the cable from beginning to end, if necessary, replace it...
Try to determine under what conditions it is tough to shift into and out of gear... i.e. does it happen when it's cold or warmed up or what - I know alot of owner's manuals say to put the boat in gear "smartly" for lack of a better term...

| We always wait untill the boat is warmed up to 160 or so which is our operating temp and then we have problems, sometimes it is fine, but more often it is really hard. My dad and i will inspect the cable today, with the grease, where do i put the grease on the cable, i dont want to make a mess. |

elecracr, your i/o will have a shifter interlock that grounds the coil while moving in and out of forward and reverse. fix it properly or you will damage the gears, cables and shifter forks. it may just be a cable adjustment or lack of lube, but someone might have by-passed this feature.
there is alot of merc info online.( if that is what you have.)
educate yourself and make your dad proud. |

Disconnect at the gearbox end and try moving the lever. If it's still hard to move, it's a cable problem. If not, it's a gearbox/selector problem. _________________ Jeff |
