I recently tried to rent a U-haul trailer for moving and they said that they don't rent U-haul trailers to Ford Explorer owners due to the rising costs of defending lawsuits.

That makes me a little concerned about towing my boat.

Are there any SUV's that work well for towing?

prestige, uHaul wants you to rent one of their trucks so they can make more money.

There is nothing wrong with towing with your Exploder as long as you stay within the weight guidelines put forth by Ford.

That's a bit extreme. That policy is a result of the problems Ford was having with their OEM Firestone tires. Ford no longer uses Firestone, and they had a pretty agressive exchange program going for about a year to get the affected tires off the road.

Aside from braking (your boat/trailer probably weighs almost as much as your truck) you don't have anything to worry about.

How about a new Tahoe...I got my around 30K and 0%.....And it can tow...It's not too big like Expie or Sequoia but there is alot of room inside. Oh yeah, gotta love the tow/haul mode.

The Tahoe "drives" and feels bigger than the Expedition or the Seqoia. I have recently driven all three of the above, and a Suburban.

The Tahoe tows the best and feels the best, in my opinon. I am buying a Tahoe within the next few months.

Those tahoe's are nice but I think they are overpriced. I haven't looked at used ones though.

We use an explorer to tow our boat a lot and it does pretty well. It struggles on the highway with hills but it has enough power to keep you at speed at 70mph.

Youre so right about that. At the Boston car show I saw them advertising 45k for a new, loaded-ish Tahoe. Probably the biggest sticker shock I ever had. I turned to the salesperson and asked him if that was a misprint. 45k for a truck whose base technology that is about 10 years old, based on a run of the mill pickup frame and engine (good ones albeit). He laughed and told me it has heated seats

I'm looking for a 98-00 tahoe with 80-100000 miles on it. 10k is the spending limit. Youre so right though, new ones are INSANELY overpriced.

I tow with a '99 Exploder, I wish the truck was a bit heavier and I had trailer brakers, but it does okay. Funny thing, if you go rent a trailer at U-Haul with a Mountaineer, they won't bat an eye. Exact same truck, different name, no problem...

I use a '97 Explorer and don't really have any problems with. Twice I've had to get everyone out of the boat and pull the drain plugs before I could get up the ramp, but the ramp was 200' long and inclined all the way....and that was more of a problem with my tires than anything else.

As a general rule longer wheel base vehicles ride better when towing than do shorter wheel base vehicles.

And the U-Haul thing is just a CYA thing for them. I don't know how long they've had that policy but I used to rent car-haulers from them a couple of years ago.

Wow, that's quite a depreciation. It'd be dropping down $35,000 in 4-6 years?

Have you seen tahoes for this price or is it just wishful thinking?

Yah, it's stupid to pay 45k for a loaded Tahoe. Up here in Oregon Tahoes and Subs are discount heavyly, 12000 off MSRP is normal.

Wakebrad, Erik. I don't think you can get a 98-2000 for around 10k. 15k maybe.

I think explorer v6 is a fine tow rig but for those who live in hilly area, v8 is better choice.

I once saw a guy towing his 24'+ cuddy cabin speed boat with his 95' explorer and get this, he don't even have a hitch he just tow it traight from his bumper. Now that is stupid to me. I hate to be the guy behind him when his bumper give out.

Sure can. Tons - for that price too. I look daily for the newer listings but in my area there are 5-10 for sale in my zip code on cars.com and autotrader.com for the price I mentioned. 2000's are more rare but I've seen them at about 11k. I've seen LOTS of 97-99's at the below 10k price range though.

Erik Jernberg, like I said, that's a lot of depreciation. How's the reliability on those things?

Do those of you who tow with V6 Explorers, do you drive with the overdrive off to save your transmission?

89 skier, yes, we always do.

Bruky, you serious? 15k for an escalade? That's crazy. Man, I'm glad I didn't buy either of those cars. I could get 15k for my '99 3 series.

I need to start looking at some of these cars.

Yeah, I was thinking of trading my '02 F-150 Lariat for an '00 or '01 Escalade, but either way I'm going to have a pre-latest model body style, and my 150 pulls and drives better so I decided not to. Was serious about it for a while, so I'm sure on the prices.

I'd say go with a tahoe Z71 and lift it and tow with that...
