I have seen a few threads suggesting that one should wear a helmet while wakeboarding, especially while first starting and while learning new tricks.

Would this be the same kind of helmet that one would wear while kayaking?

I would only wear a helmet for sliders.

I don't know what a kayaking helmet is like. I'm sure if you looked at some pictures on the sight you'd see someone with a helmet.

My son never had a helmet. But last week he was doing a slider?....where he was on the top of the crest riding toe side edge first?....well....caught an edge and bit it. board came around and popped him in the back of the head. Luckily he didn't break open....but had the biggest bump on his head I've ever seen. We went and got one of those Calix helmets....they look like a hard baseball helmet. It was only $35. But.........I never would have guessed before that you could get hit in the head with your board before that.

I did it one time a few weeks ago when the water was really choppy... cut the back of my head open... not bad but I did... turned my blonde hair red... kind of scary... the guys in the boat thought I was dying... its amazing how fast you realize your friends really care about you... maybe its cuz I am a girl... haha... yeah helmets are good...

eh... I wouldn't recommend wearing a helmet for normal wakeboarding. For sliders, definitely. However, (and this is debatable) some people, myself included, think that your run a greater risk of neck and head injury if you wear a helmet for normal wakeboarding. Having a larger surface (helmets are bigger than your head, you know) will make your head decelerate faster when it hits the water, and most head injuries seem to be caused from rapid deceleration--not from the actual impact of your head on the water.

Never wear a helmet while riding behind the boat, always wear one when hitting sliders.

I am not about to cut my head open again and have to be sent back to the ER and have more stitches so while learning new things i will most definately be wearing a helmet and id recommend it. Especially if you've scorpioned b4, because that means your flexible enough to do it again.

I don't usually wear a helmet when I'm just riding around, but when I'm planning to do inverts or learn something new, I always put a helmet on. I've been smacked in the face with my board, and that's not really something I want to do again. For those of you who don't think it's possible for your body to bend like that or whatever, you really have no idea...water thrashes your body.
