Hi all,
Tried my first Raley yesterday.
I edged like a fool at the wake and loaded the line 'til I thought my arms were going to come out the socket. I then got the pop and swung my legs out behind me. The handle slipped out my hand and I had the most painfull fall for a long time!
Apparantly, as I was told AFTER, the most important thing in a Raley is don't lose the handle!
Any other gems of advice?

use the search button,
also try it on a wakeskate first to get the feeling of being back and then pulling it down.

Yeah wakeskate is a lot easier on the body.
How high were you getting? Sounds kind of like if you would of held on you could of pulled it back in. Got a video ?

colefooter, I was told I was getting about 8 feet. It was an incredible pop like I've never felt! I actually thought I was higher than that but that will be the fear distorting things in my mind!!!!
I'm going to try and borrow a Digital Video this weekend and I'll try and post some stuff next week. (Currently trying to learn a Raley, Backroll and 360! I'm just hoping it all comes good one day, that'll be a very good day!)

i tried my first raley today and it was pretty intense. THe pop and whip feeling of the board getting snapped back behind you is insane. I had the beginners' problem of letting go and then front flipping nearly every time. I consider it though a good start. I've got the edge down and i just need to work on the rest. I should try the wakeskate theory next time. Unfortunately i'm done boarding for the season, i had my final sweet session today:( I'm flying back up to AK tomorrow at 11am so i'm through.
Basically I have always been intimidated by the raley, but then today i said "hey it is my last day on the water for nearly a year, why not just go for it?" So, I did and it wasn't as bad as i thought. Next year i'll get it down for sure!

Never tried one.....Do you initiate a raley like a backroll? Just cut harder, extend your arms, and don't rotate all the way?
Thanks

Try it on a trampoline without a board first -
put your trampoline next to a tree and tie your rope just a little bit higher than your face-height. You'll definately be able to feel the pull when you reach the fulcrum point. After you're comfy on the trampoline, put your padded underwear on and head to the lake.
- oh yea, one more thing - you will NEVER land a raley unless you concentrate on looking up! As soon as you leave the wake, look straight up the rope to the tower.
When you land it the first time, you'll be amazed at how simple it was and how fast you're going!

Zcashion - - if you load the line correctly, and hold on, the trick will pull itself down.

there is a pic of a raley attempt by me a few days ago. As you can see i was kinked in the air and letting go of the rope to start the frontflip bail. It is going to be a trick i'll get for sure next summer.

looked liek you didn;t cut hard enough/load the line enough. Plus you need to look at the boat or tower to keep you square to the boat...And for goodness sake hang on. j/k

i've gotten past the front flip and have moved on to where i get way up in the air, going huge and just do a humongous bellyflop while trying to pull it back down. Those occasionally hurt for days. Any advice to bring it all the way down?

if you still have the rope in your hands and do a belly flop, then you don't have near enough line tension.... so cut a lot harder. The difference maker foir me on this trick, was just going all out. The first time i cut in as hard as i thought i could with out feeling out of control i stuck it.

i36hyperlite, just pull the handle down and try to bring your feet in as hard as you can. For a little bit don't go FULLY stretched out, still get parallel with the water, but don't have your board 10 feet above you head.

If I were you I would load the line as hard as possible - and don't be concerned about how vertical your legs are when you throw it.
You've also got something else going on because your body is slightly skewed up on the left. Make sure when you take off that your body is pretty much square with the boat.
I can only imagine the amount of pain you're in right now, but just think how painful it will be after you slam a dozen more times.
A progressive edge on any raley-style trick has to be one of the most progressive that you can do. If you edge correctly, the raley is almost effortless - the board will throw itself back, and then as long your eyes are pointed at the tower, your body will naturally begin to bring it back down. Don't forget to spot your landing at the last second.
It sounds corny, but I'd suggest that you make yourself a couple notecards with some step-by-step instruction on them and take them out on the boat. Just before you get in the water, read through the steps so they'll be fresh in your mind - then you'll be able to make a concious effort, rather than get worked over and over again.
Don't get discouraged - just take more tylenol before you get out on the water.

i wanna try one on my wakeskate but every time i even jump on the wakeskate the board flys out from under me and then a few seconds later i come down on teh board and get scraped by the grip tape or just plop right on it, if i could figure out how to stop this id try a raley but i cant figure out how to stop from getting raped by my skate

| haha that's kinda funny dude...umm i don't know what to tell you-i'm trying my first wakeskate raley tomorrow but i've done backrolls and things off of it and it usually flies like a million lightyears away from me...the difference between jumping on a wakeskate and doing a raley is huge because your board will be gone when you try the raley no doubt...when jumping, it stays with you because the goal is to land on it and keep riding

Zcahion, you also need to not fight it. If you fight the trick, and don't let your body extend all the way back, you won;t be able to pull it down. The way the trick comes down is your body flies up to it's apex, then is rebounded back to the water. So if you fight it and try to pull it down before you are extended, you will not rebound and will eat $%!#

| well i tried that wakeskate raley a ton the other day but it feels so much different from on the wakeboard and i still seem to have the trouble of not pulling it in...there's no hard yank at full extension like on the wakeboard so i don't know when to pull in...

| grokwik, people pratice tanrums, frontrolls, and backrolls. i wouldn't be a fan of praticing a backroll on a skate, might come and hit ya, but the tantrums an front rolls the board should stop in the water.

You can get hurt bad on big raleys if you dont pull in hard enough...I thought i collapsed a lung a few days ago... These kids were like can you do a raley and I was like "pssh, yeah man" acting all cool like, (cause i can do raleys) so i cut hard and threw it-but i wanted to give it that extra parks bonifay beat....but im not parks, so i just landed on my face cause i held it too long.

the wakeskate wont follow you on the raley by the way. Go for it-its fun when you can look down at the water and be like "Hey I was just down there!"

| also make sure you punch your arms straight , if they're not straight the yank will make you let go of the handle. when you first learn it it is imparative to have your arms completely straight, that will make your whole body straight, making it easier to hang on against the pull, and easier to bring you arms down to your waist to initiate the way down. just try and work on keeping your arms straight and you have it. gl

nice one steve,
i did somthing similar, i haven't landed one yet but i'm still trying
i didn't edge hard eneough so when i pulled not all the line tension was there and my feet stopped coming down, everyone in the boat though i was knocked out but no pain, just no more bindings on my feet
