I've heard this term many times, but I don't really know what they mean by it. I'm looking at the list on the X-2 I'm thinking of buying and it says reverse gel coat. What does that mean as far as the manufacturing processes and why is it good to have?

Thanks

I think it's where they spray the gelcoat into the mold and then lay the fiberglass on top of it. I think it's a pretty standard construction technique.

Unless I am misunderstanding the question..... it is having one color on the bottom of the hull and the white up top. I.E. When normally you would have a white gel coat on the bottom of your boat and then red color along the sides. It would be reverse colors. Red on the bottom and white up top...... Make sense?

Ah, ok, thanks.
I have another question. Is the difference between the 310hp engine and the 350hp engine enough to warrant not buying the boat ('03 MC X-2)? 40hp difference is a lot, but then 310hp is a lot to start with compared to the 240hp my current '86 MC has. Just concerned that when weighted down, the 310hp option they have in there might not be enough. Anyone have any tales to tell about that concern?

310 will probably be enough for anything.... If it is 310 my guess is, it is not fuel injected. Might be wrong, but check..... That is just your own preference and re-sale considerations to think about..... I have 320 fuel injected and it does the job

I think what they do is the throttle body injection (carb. with a metered squitter) vs. the fuel injection. You're right though, re-sale is something to consider.

All Mastercraft come with Fuel injected engines. My Dad & his friend each bought 1998 Prostar 205's, my dad got the upgraded 340hp LT1 Corvette Engine while his friend got the base 310. I've driven both & good lord is there a difference. I've pulled skiers(the friend is 6'8") & wakeboarders with a loaded (2,000lbs) boat. The old racing line, you can never beat more horsepower, holds true. It can be done but I certainly like the extra bump. The upgrade will probably have a better computer/ignition system as well, ours has the Cadillac Northstar & it adjusts for temp/humidity/load etc. Pretty damn nice & it gets much better fuel "mileage".

I think a powerband comparison is in order. I'm not doubting your real-world experience, Stephan, but I'm fairly certain that the added hp on the 'vette engine is all top-end (i.e., not much help at wakeboard speed) and little, if any, difference in torque.

Just a thought.

That may well be true but the MPFI version of the motor (the LT1 is MPFI) have the better engine management system as Stephan indicates. I believe the sub-300 hp engines are SPFI and the engine management is relatively crude.

MPFI engines always start easily and are as fuel efficient as any V8 lump mounted in a boat can be.

MrBlean, good to know. It makes sense. I mean, I know guys who have LS1's in the Camaro's/Firebirds (not a lightweight car compared to the Vette) making 330hp and still knocking down 28 - 30 mpg! That is one of the reasons I was asking. I think the electronics make a difference as well.

Hey Swass, it's not rocket science nor is it Greek.

SPFI is single point fuel injection. It's relatively crude. The carb is replaced by a single injector located at the head of the inlet manifold. That one injector supplies all 8 cylinders simultaneously, just like a carb does.

MPFI is multi-point fuel injection where each cylinder has it's own injector injector which is individually controlled by a sophisticated engine management system.

MPFI yields better fuel control hence better economy, lower emissions and often, more power.

Was not my intention. There are a lot of people who view and contribute to this forum who know virtually nothing about engines. When I first submitted the post, I did wonder about explaining the acromyms then thought that might apprear arrogant/patronising so chose not to.

It was clear you were being humourous but not at all obvious if you knew the difference between SPFI and MPFI - hence my explanation. You've just been a victim of the weakness of written communication - no intonation or facial expression.

Sorry if I offended.

Hate to do this to you Joe but you started it so......

When correcting people, check out your facts first. You are correct in that the "P" in MPFI can stand for "Port". However, as there are 30,500 listings on google for multi-point fuel injection versus only 12,100 for multi-port, I'll stay with multi-point, thanks.

OK so I started something. The V8 engine in the mid 80's to 90's Z28 and Iroc Camaro's and Firebirds was a TPI or a Tuned port Injection. and in the case of MPFI... This was off a V-6 Pontiac.

Now I'm not saying this is 100% accurate since I do not know what the pesky Japanese call it, but here in america This has been what I've always seen it refered to as. So I will stick to what is physicly stamped on the intake manifolds.

Hey you guys all need to just step back in time a bit and get a bloody carb...

Just kidding...

I've a 1989 MC with a 454, any pointers on upgrading are appreciated.

Wes

I guess you could say we Hijacked your thread, from gel coats to fuel injection. Sorry about that.

wesgardner

If that 454 was on 4 wheels I could tell you tons. I'm really not up to date on marine performance parts because it takes so much to make so little of a difference on the water, hardly seems worth it. My buddy does have a 1976 17'glastron with a built 460 with nitrous and jet drive. It will make you poo your pants. Very Happy

Joe, MPFI is used to mean both multi-point and multi port. We're both right but your original post suggested I was wrong in the use of the phrase multi-point. You stay with multi-port, I'll stay with multi-point. They both refer to the same thing.
