Anyone have any experience with this brace?

For the last 2-3 years I have been riding with a carbon fiber brace called a Nuklever. It's some German contraption that so far has worked wonderfully, but as I grow, it's beginning to feel a little to snug, and I am getting very tired of the gas shock in the back getting snagged on my shorts.

I have looked around on the web, and around town at the local MX shops, and none of them carry EVS, so any info would have to come from the web. Out of the thousands on this site I figured at least a few of you have/have had this brace. A little review would be greatly appreciated as this topic, as far as I know (after multiple searches) hasn't been brought up before ( Arrow would make a great review to refer others to in the future Idea ).

Thanks all!

Is that a brace to prevent injury, or one as a result of injury (helps when doing searches) Wink

I looked into CTI2 from Innovative Sports. There's is all carbon and will not rust. To save money I was going to try Asterisk but theres is no good for water. Since I moto and wakeboard its worth paying the money for the CTI. However, let me know what other braces you find as I am still looking around....

I don't use that brace (EVS Web)...my knees aren't that bad yet... but have checked it out and it's a SWEET brace. Definitly the one I will pick up when I get to that point.

so has anyone tried this brace yet?

If you are using a knee brace, what kind of brace are you using and do you like it?

I just f'd up my knee over a week ago and the doc said it might be a slightly torn meniscus. I'm getting an MRI to find out how bad. I need a brace and so far I thing the EVS is about the only good option I've seen on the web. I just haven't seen one in person yet.

if you have a torn meniscus, don't get surgery. it will still hurt after. It's a waste of money.

Thanks Dees. I get the MRI done tomorrow morning. We'll see how it is. I called my insurance and they said that if the doc writes that I need a brace then my insurance will cover it. (I love good medical insurance). Looks like I can just get the EVS Web and try it out. I'll write a review on it after I've used it.

hey dutch ...hope the mri goes well. i actually just bought the WEB about a month ago. few things...

1. it comes with 3 extra washers to adjust the hyperextension stop. standard is 180degree and then they have the washers thatll stop at 170, 160, 150. ive left mine at 180 though, im actually almost ready to put the 170 stop in.

2. i dunno if youve read this ...but apparently if you take a shot HARD enough to destroy something like say, a bone ....the force will transfer to the brace joints and blow those out instead of breaking your bone.

as far as how it works ....its great. only 2 things kinda bug me.
1. it has for velcro straps to hold in place ....but the one right above the knee is pretty tight. as in ...the loop that you feed the strap through kinda digs into the inside of your leg as your strapping it down. once its adjusted and set tho ...the discomfort goes away.

2. the outside joint felt and sounded a little loose ...but the bolts are tightened enough to ensure thats not the case. i assume thats part of the design ...but i havent checked yet. its not too bad ...but if youre walkin with it on then itll kinda make a poppy sound. i figure ill check the bolts when/if i add that hyperextension stop.

as far as everything else ...its a great great brace. i have a friend thats had 2 acl surgeries and spent like 900 bucks on his brace and then when i showed him mine and showed him the description ...he wished he knew about the WEB before he bought his present brace. Smile if theres anything else you wanna know just let me know. good luck again

*chris*, how is it when you're wakeboarding? Does it handle water well?

Thanks for the review. Sounds like a really nice brace.

handles water great ...the velcro doesnt slip unless you skid across the water against the open end of the straps. usually it has to be adjusted at least once right after a restart ....just to make sure its set right.

it still gives plenty of movement in the knee for tricks but of course no side-to-side flexing. its really helped with those crashes that usually tweak your knee.

bruky did you say "gas shock"!? on a knee brace!? thats crazy man. theres plenty of room left over when im wearing the WEB. doesnt really get hung up on the brace at all. cept on restarts ....but thats just a quick pull down over the brace and your good.

I can speak for this as well. I had the surgery in September 2003. In my surgery they were able to use sutures to reattach the miniscus together, in some cases they just removed the damaged parts, just depends on how tore up it is. I wish I never had the surgery, I actually tore it again a couple months ago. Maybe the surgeries where they just remove part of it would be better because you can't tear it if it is not there.

So I am just now starting to look for good brace. Is there a website that I can check out the WEB brace at????

preston sucks to hear you tore the meniscus again man. as for the brace ....

main website - www.evs-sports.com
then just click on the action sports icon.
also, you can go to yahoo/google/etc and just type in evs WEB knee brace. youll get a whole list of places that offer it for sale. i went directly through evs to get mine tho. ive seen the brace on other sites cheaper by $30 or so than what you can get it from evs.

just to give you an idea ...2day shipping plus actual brace cost was a grand total of $385.

i use the cti2 and it is a great brace. i have the patella cup for when i ride my dirtbike. it was custom fitted and quite pricey. i had acl surgery in june 2003 so my insurance covered the cost under durable medical equipment.

the velcro straps will get loose on real hard crashes, but other than that it is very comfortable. innovative sports have several good over the counter braces as well as donjoy. just check their web sites.

dutch good luck on the mri.

dutch howd that mri treat ya? hope its nothin bad.

just an update on the WEB. the hyperextension stops work wonderfully. i installed the 170s and works great. knee doesnt feel like its stretching beyond what it can take. instructions say consult your doctor before installing the stops ....but as long as you can tell about how far your knee can extend before it starts hurting then you should be able to judge which stops you should use.

*chris*, I have to go pick up the MRI diagnostics tonight. Then on Monday I have another appointment with my Ortho doc, so he'll tell me how bad or good it is.

My knee has been feeling better every day though, so that's good. My doc didn't seem to think it was bad when he looked at the X-rays, so I'm hoping for the best.
I'll let you know on Tuesday how it turns out.

glad to hear its been feeling better. haha on a side note ...i gotta add this. stay with me on this one ...i had a chick ask me if i really had knee problems or if i was just wearing my brace to get attention. Rolling Eyes only response i could think of was ....no, theres nothing wrong with my knee, thats why i only spent 400bucks on a %^&$*$ brace and who knows how much on painkillers in the last few months ...dur. Evil or Very Mad eventually laughed it off tho cuz i just couldnt help but think how stupid she prolly is. Laughing

Dutch,

Very interested to hear what your orthopod offers as options if your diagnosis is "torn meniscus". Did my knee on Saturday (just rising to a standing position more than three hours after riding), initial visit with orthopod this morning, MRI tomorrow. His first impression was that it doesn't show enough lateral movement or swelling to be an ACL, probably torn meniscus and arthroscopy in 4-5 weeks. This thread is the first I've heard of a "let it heal" approach, but I'd be interested in comparing your doc's response to mine if you decide to pose that question.

Good luck,
The_FNG

My torn meniscus was in what the surgeon called a 'bucket handle' position. I couldn't straighten my leg because the femer was stuck on the wrong side of the meniscus. Had surgery friday to repair and to reconstruct ACL. It sucks, but my insurance co is buying me a knee brace for rehab and, eventually, wakeboarding.

*chris*, it's a damper. When your bones compress together, it applies reverse pressure, via another mini-pressurize contraption, and keeps your knees from crunching together. I got this thing when I tore something in my knee and I lost some cartilage a while back, so they wanted me to keep the pressure off my knee. There is a solid joint in the front of the brace that pivots, then there is the gas shock in the back, which annoyingly, slows down your bending/squating because of the shock, but you get used to it.
