Anyone do this? I'm thinking of taking it up so that I can pay for my upcoming wakeboarding season. It sucks being in college Anyways I was just wondering if it hurt or anything and how much you guys make doing it. I think it's like $200 a month here. |

I've heard it makes you cold. I'll all about giving blood and do that all the time, but I have a rule about anything that goes out of my body, it does not go back in!

It's only like 60 bucks a week here. I have never heard of it taking 6 hours, more like 2. I also have a friend who does this and he over hydrates and is in and out in about 35-45 minutes. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

Interesting, I've never heard of just donating plasma. I'd figure they'd take blood from you & just separate it. Can someone explain to me why they'd pull out the plasma & not just the whole blood? Seems to me like that'd be easiest & shortest.
I dunno about age restrictions, when it comes to donating blood I think you hafta be 16 & no less than 110 lbs.
Plasma is the matrix for your red blood cells. You can take a sample of your blood & physically separate it into 2 parts, red blood cells & plasma. The red blood cells are solid & viscous while the plasma is watery & clear. The plasma contains nutrients & proteins that nourish the red blood cells as well as your cells.
Donating it shouldn't be dangerous 'cuz the turnaround time in your body is very short. Red blood cells live an average of 120 days & then they're recycled. After donating you probably hafta take it easy for a day so your body can regenerate, but I imagine it's a safe procedure. |

I'm not too up on the donations of blood products but you can actually donate plasma twice a week. Just make sure you're well fed and hydrated; don't use the same arm twice in a week. My understanding is that the needle is much large than the one used for donating blood.
The instances where I have used plasma is for emergency situations to help with "coagulation" AKA thickening of the blood. You can donate twice because you're getting your Red blood cells back and only "taking the watery component" Hence the reason for the larger needle.
You would be amazed at how many different "by products/components" can be broken down by 1 pint of blood.
hopes this makes some sense....if not that means you're gonna make me look this stuff up and I'm too tired to look through my books that are still packed from my move. |

My fraternity brothers used to do this all the time for Beer money! I think you get a free health test too! I would never do it-I cannot stand needles! They said that there were always some rough looking people in there. I think it does help medical research? _________________ My opinion is my opinion!

I think what your talking about is donating platelets not plasma. It is called Apheresis, they take the blood out of you, remove the platelets, and then pump the blood back into you. Although they can just remove plasma with apheresis, they are usually after your platelets, they can get enough plasma from the whole blood donors but not enough platelets. It takes about 2 hours so they usually let you watch a movie. Platelets only have a five day storage life and until recently it took five to ten donors of whole blood to get enough platelets for one transfusion. When you give whole blood they seperate it into red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
Red blood cells are the most adundant cells in your blood and their primary function is to transport oxygen. Are tranfused to increase oxygen carrying capacity to patients who are bleeding or anemic.
Platelets help blood clot. Are transfused to people with low platelet counts or abnormally function platelets.
Plasma is a clear yellowist fluid that is 90% water, it carries nutrients around your blood. Are transfused to people when blood volume is needed, liver failure, and severe burns.

I used to sell my plasma in college - "donate" means "give"......I got cash money, no "giving" at all.
It doesn't take that long at all....I can't recall the first time, but I know it didn't take any 6 hours. The only reason the first time would take longer is for the interview part where they make sure you haven't had anal sex with any Haitian boys in the last ten years. Blood does not take longer to come out of your arm the first time than it does on the second time. It would take me about an hour each time...I squeezed that little ball like a champ so I could get done quicker.
They stick you just like if you were donating blood....it goes into a centrifuge and seperate the plasma from the blood....when they have the plasma they need, they pump the blood back into you...they unstick you and give you your Kool-Aid and cookies, cash and send you on your way.
I used to ride my bike 4-5 miles, sell plasma, then ride home....in Cetral Texas 100 degree heat during the summer. That probably isn't the brightest way to go about doing that.
If I were you, I would find a better way to make cash...we could only go 2x a week and I think it was $20 first visit, $15 each visit from then on out. $200 a month is way more than I ever made. I never would have done it if I wasn't flat broke and jobless. |

I found an add for sperm a few months ago that offered like 350 dollars twice a month for three months to donate sperm but I think they have a killer screening process. So check out your local sperm banks. Me, im not down with it. Couldn't handle the thought that I might have children out there and not know it. _________________ jt09 wrote:

There has been talk of donating sperm around my floor at school. I would never do it. I can't imagine me having kids and not even knowing it then someday when im 50 seeing a "Top News Story - Kids Re-United W/ Donor Father" Doesn't sound like my kind of deal, although where can you go wrong with getting paid to jerk off. Oh well, I still stick to my "I'm never donating sperm" moto. |
