we found a perfect boat, but my stepdad says that a little under 600 hours it would be a waste of money..

atached is a pic of the nautique 2001 selling for ~7500

my stepdad said "i would be a fool to buy that when i can get a brand new bayliner without a tower for 14000" i just wanna know what to expect from a boat with 600 hours on it, owner says "The engine is a Ford 351 that has been routinely serviced, winterized, and kept out of salt water." i really really want to get this boat...just need to see if 600 is way too many hours on a boat

Not at all. We put over 3500 hours on our last two Nauti's. That 2001 has much more wake potential than any Bayliner.

Your step dad is an idiot. If I am correct, all bayliners are I/Os and called bayliners because their main purpose to line bays and provide artificial reefs for fish. They are only good for tubing and sinking.

I couldn't help you with hours, but ask the owner to let you test drive it. If things sound right that is a plus! Also if you can get a mechanic to check out the engine that would be nice too. Trust me if you can get a towered/sky pylon boat that is an inboard for much cheaper than the bayliner I can't see why you wouldn't. In the future I would suggest getting a tower attached instead of the sky pylon. With the tower the nautique will still cost less than the crap bayliner.

Average time out a day 3 hours of motor time.

600/3 = 200 days of use. Inboards basically have car engines, just more powerful and much more taken care of. That's not even a full year of use. I don't see why this is too many hours.

If I'm not mistaken, this boat does not have 600 hrs... It has 1200.

Check it out-

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2486111052&category=66467

600 hrs is probably nothing to worry about, but 1200 might be pushing it. I guess it all depends on how good it was taken care of.

It really all depends on how well it was taken care of. Could last 3000 hrs +
I would have a mechanic check it out. Also, if this guy is lying to you about hours you don't know what else he could be hiding. Just a thought.

For once I agree with Bruky. A Nautique properly treated will go a solid 1500-2000 hours without MAJOR issue (major meaning head gasket, transmission or engine failure)

I put over 5K hours on my late 80's mastercraft and it was in premo shape when I sold it. In fact the only thing wrong was the hour meter, it quit working (and it was a VDO)

When you look at a boat, go see it where it's kept. If it happens to be at their home, and their home is a disaster, then it's a good sign that the boat too has seen some neglect

When I was a kid (buying my first car) my dad taught me that. Don't just look at the car (boat in your case) look at where it's coming from...

I have ridden behind a older nauti with 3,000 hrs on it and it ran just fine. Mine personally has 1,200 and the motor is sound and that is always running 3 full sacs.
The thing you have to watch out for is the other parts such as cables,silencers,carbs..ect. I had to replace a few of those parts on mine and had a few other minor problems due to most of the parts where the origanals. As far as the bayliner goes they are pretty much crap for wakeboarding. I know I own one of those also(1st boat). The resale value for the nauti will outlast the bayliner. The bayliner will loose a crap load of money as soon as you drive it off the lot where as the nauti you will be able to sell for atleast what you bought it for. Hope this helps out if you have anymore question,s hit me up.

A friend of mine ( who is a mechanic and has his own shop) has a 93 Nautique with 1900 hrs, he claims as long as you do the routine maintenance ie. oil change every 50 hrs and at the end of every season, new impeller once a year etc. you will get a long life out of your motor before you need to re-build the top end. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way.

If the boat you are looking at has 1200 hrs, a compression test will give you a pretty good idea of how strong the motor is.
A mechanic will be able to tell you what a good reading is for a Ford 351,
The last motor I had re-built was a Ford 302 and I believe a reading of 120 is ok, 150 per cylinder is excellent. Anything under 100 would be worn/ broken rings and in need of a full re-build.

thanks for all the input, can i get a compression test done at any mechanic shop?? how can i have a mechanic check it without buying it?? he just wrote back to me and said
" I can take a picture of the engine as well, but I'll probably have to wait until you clear your inbox again to send it. There are 1200 hours on the boat, which is midlife on that engine (Pleasurecraft Ford 351). I had the engine scoped a few weeks ago to ensure that there is no damage in the cylinder areas and the Correct Craft dealer said that there are at least another 1200 hours on this boat and that it is in top condition. In case you are not familiar with scoping, they use an instrument during a servicing to inspect the areas inside the engine where no human eye can see. For comparison, my girlfriend's family has the exact same boat at her lakehouse in Georgia and they have almost 2000 hours on the boat and it runs incredibly strong.
"

lmk, thanks

Don't worry so much about the hours, Worry more about condition, Compression, rust Etc... I've seen boats go for as little as 800 hrs and as long as 2500 hours. So its all up to how the boat was taken care of. Just make sure you get a good deal if your buying a boat with high hours.

If you can wait a bit my Ski Nautique is going up for sale soon. @980 hours, brand new powder coated tower, new upholstry, runs perfect, treated like a prized posession (and is). 8500 dollars. Title is free and clear in my posession. Will be a quick sale and I want it to go to a nice wakeboarding person. I am listing it for sale in the November timerframe.

Keep in mind also wtbamoomba, even if the engine needs to be repaired, you can take it to a shop and the have the engine re-built for at the most $1500. The rest of the boat is fairly easy to check out and the velvet drive trannies are bullet proof. You can go to any auto parts store and buy a cylinder compression gauge for like 15 bucks to check out the engine. Like deepcove said, anything over 100 is ok, but 120 + is the best. I bought my 2001 used from a marina, and the first thing I did was check out the compression, all the cylinders were over 120, so I knew I have a good engine, and I used the boat all last summer and this summer, and all I had to do was change the oil. It starts and runs like a champ. The only other thing that you need to worry about is the shaft seal, and even if you have to replace it with the best on the market, you’re looking at $500. But if I were you, I would wait and get Erik Jernberg's boat, you cannot beat the price, and he is a good guy. I would gladly pay a little more money to deal with someone who I know is honest and upfront... and Erik is your man...

latez...

Geez... only 1200 hours on a 80's boat.. I've got 900 hours on my 99 VLX and it's still running strong... It's all about taking care of the engine... regular oil changes are probably the most important thing to keeping the engine running well for YEARS.

i would think that 1200 hours is not that bad for an engine. alot of the boat engines out there are modified car engines, and if you htink about it a car engine with 50,000 miles on it at an average of 40 mph is only 1250 hours of use, so its not too bad, it could run for longer as long as its taken care of, as most have said already.

You should also find a inboard mechanic in the seller's area and call them and ask if they do engine and boat checks for perspective buyers. I would try to use a shop that this guy is not known at in order to get a good idea of the boat's condition from a bipartisan party. I bought my boat last year over the internet and called a few shops in the seller's area. I was able to find a shop that charged around $150 to check everything over and send me a fax of the results. Though I had to spend $150, I also knew that I was getting a boat that was in great shape. I would suggest that you do the same thing in order to make your step dad happy as well as to make sure you are not buying a lemon online. Good luck with the search.

damn..well i just got told off pretty bad today, i was told to wait a lil while longer to look for boats, and my family said that buying from a private party of ebay or whatever is not an option because they cant take any more money out from the bank (loan) he said the only option he is considering is buying a brand new cheap boat because the only way he wants to finance is through a marina or something..... this leads me to my next question... how the hell can i find a good wakeboard boat at a marina for a good price?? this sucks... Sad

Find a used inboard at a Marina...it shouldn't be that hard to find a good one. You can finance a used boat through the marina too as long as they are the ones selling it. Just look for an early to mid 90's direct drive. when your parents buy it work your ass off to show them how much you need/want a tower. Fat friends come first (even better are fat relatives b/c they dont' want to get in the water and try it like a fat friend would) then you can get some fat sacs.

I just bought a 89 Mastercraft from NC that has 200 hours on it. I asked the same question when I was shopping around about the hours. Most everybody told me that if the motor was taken care of and oil changed every 50 hours, winterized every year that they can go 2500-3000 hours. Thats what the mechanics told me. I would take the boat for a test run before I bought it. Also check boattraderonline.com I saw a couple Mastercrafts up there from NC. Not sure what part your from.

No sir this is a user uploaded photo. I am going to fix that gallery to make sure it shows the owner so that questions can be sent along to them Smile

I'm still just at this point **considering** the Super Air although it gets more likely every week. The plan is to buy/find the SAN first then deal with selling the other boat. Still just considering it though.
