|
|
Well I've just started wakeboarding, and I can get up, ride around, cross both wakes, all the real beginner stuff...so I want to try 1 wake jumping.
I've read the trick tips on this website, and I now realize that now actual physical jumping movement is needed...It seems that every time I try to do a heelside jump off the wake, I just go up, then down the wake. I also am still trying to understand edging, progressive edging. And from what I see, is it almost like "surfing" to the top of the wake?
Any suggestions? Is there any "pop" motion I need to do? Thanks for the help! |

Wendy Wilcox, if your bending youre knees as you take off the wake then your absorbing pop generated from the wake, but if you do it while in the air then your fine. _________________ Wake Forest University |

when you say "surfing to the top of the wake" it makes me think you aren't on edge, and that you've got the board somewhat flat on the water. you should be on edge, so the wake is hitting like the bottom of the board and at that moment you straighten your knees out. When I was beginning I would misunderstand what people meant when they say "stand tall" and I would go off edge, when they say stand tall, they mean, straighten your body, you straighten your back, knees and waist when you hit the wake. _________________ Some female cows have horns, but you wouldn't really know anything about that now would you? |

| So you hit the wake tall -for some reason that feels awkward. Does it just take time to get used to |

look in the trick tips section of this site and look up progressive edge. i would try heelside jumps first, they are a lot easier. but once you got 1 wake heelside jumps down, learn toeside 1 wakes before heelside wake 2 wake. i made this mistake and i can jump w2w heelside really good but cant jump toeside worth crap |

Zito, Wendy I feel your pain. I am still struggling with this. I have learned that it is not an exaggerated movement, but just a straightening up movement. Don't try to stand tall too fast or you automatically flatten out. I still am absorbing a lot with my knees. It is a hard habit to break for most. _________________ Pain is just Fear leaving the body |

Yea, I stand tall but as I leave the wake I bring my knees into my chest and I think I am absorbing all my pop. _________________ Wakeboard/Waterski/Kneeboard/Ride Random Objects

Bringing your knees to your chest isn't a big deal as long as you wait for the pop. When I was first learning 1-wake 180s I would try to spin too early - not wait for the pop. Same thing when I first tried grabs. You just gotta squash the fear that you won't get the trick done in time; now, even though I wait for the pop, I can throw that 180 so fast that it feels like I"m waiting forever to land. Kinda fun, actually... _________________ "Practice, man, jus' practice" - Wynton Marsalis

| What do you guys mean by the "pop"? I've seen tons of guys wakeboard that can do this, and I just don't see anything that looks like a pop when getting air off the wake... |

Pop is the redirection of your lateral acceleration upward. If you just crank at the wake as hard as you can yeah you might clear it, but you'll maybe be 3-4 feet up at your highest point. By using a progressive edge, you generate "pop" - more efficiently redirect your side-to-side motion upward, thus gaining more air. I think it's called "pop" because if you set up & approach correctly, the tension on the line launches you quite noticeably when you leave the wake.
You wouldn't necessarily notice it from the boat - it looks too smooth. You feel it when you get it right on the board, though. _________________ "Practice, man, jus' practice" - Wynton Marsalis

My goal is to launch off the wake and fly through the air with my legs straightened out. This hopefully will prevent me from killing all the pop I generate. _________________ Wakeboard/Waterski/Kneeboard/Ride Random Objects

My goal as well. Last summer behind bruttenberg's Supra I finally put it all together - it felt incredible, and it was textbook. 6 feet up, w2w, legs straight in the air, landed edging away like I never left the water. So cool.
Where do you ride? I'm down in Shakopee, but the boat is at the cabin up nort'. _________________ "Practice, man, jus' practice" - Wynton Marsalis

I generally ride at Lake Elmo, Bald Eagle (White Bear Lake) and on the weekends I go up to St. Croix Falsl (Across the border from taylor's falls.) I have summer class and work during the weekends so that blows. Luckily my final is next week so I can board in the early morning after that. _________________ Wakeboard/Waterski/Kneeboard/Ride Random Objects

| Yea i just started attempting W2W's about 2 monthes ago, and a few weeks ago i learned that yours supposed to edge through the wake, i had been just keeping the board flat through it the whole time, which honestly was MUCH easier. The second i learned to edge through it i got much more air but since i hadnt ever felt that b4 my body position would go all weird bc the feeling would startle me. Then finally when i thought i got it when i came down on the other side i landed terribly wrong and scorpioned, causing me to crack my head open. BUT now i have a helmet so next time i go out im going to attempt it again, but i just cant figuire out how to edge through the whole thing, ive read many tutorials but they just dont explain it well enough. I know what a progressive edge is and all that. But i cant figuire out how to edge through the wake then land on the other side still being on edge, bc that means your leaning back. I dont know ill just practice it alot and hopefully will understand how to do it b4 i crack the new helmet. Oh and my other problem is my arms always fly up when i get air, i think thats calmed down a bit, but did anyone else have problems like this when they first started? |

Me and my friend are also both newbies.....My friend does this every once in a while, he gets in the air and panicks sometimes, and his arms will flail everywhere and screw up the angle of his body in the air, and he will eat it on the landing....I don't think i do this, maybe try and keap your hands busy while u r in the air, throw in a simple grab or something...It is actuallly quite easy...

| For added pop and a few more feet... at the very tip of the wake right when im about to get skyed off of it, I push my board into the water and then launch of the wave same concept as an ollie. |

well i had a friend tape me wakeboard today, and i guess im not just standing tall...It sure feels like i'm standing and getting air when I'm wakeboarding, but when I watched the tape, my knees were kept bent the entire time and I just went up and down the wake...
So progressive edge...once at the top of the wake, stand tall...then what? Do I keep my legs stiff or should I try bending my knees again? |

Just relax, you will need to absorb the impact with your knees so don't leave them out straight. When you start doing grabs what whatnot you can suck your knees to your chest. _________________

Fredrick Eisenhauer, means the landing impact (I hope), you should straighten you knees to make the pop off the wake, then you can do whatever with them. "Standing tall" can be confusing, it not just talking about your knees, stand tall = stand straight, don't be all bent over. _________________ Some female cows have horns, but you wouldn't really know anything about that now would you? |
