What is your budget? Your best value with be getting Raul's cans and clamps above and making your own. If you got more to spend the Fusion speakers are getting rave reviews.

| Do a search on ebay for liquid audio. i bought a pair of tower speakers for 150 bucks which included cans and mounts and speakers, Kicker DX60's. I havent come across anything commparable as far as price, granted they arnt the nicest speakers or the best looking cans but for 75 bucks a pop they work great for me.

for 300 I got 80feetout's fiberglass box that holds 4 6x9s and then went on ebay and found 2 pairs of Kenwood excelon speakers a 100 bucks a pair. BY FAR THE LOUDEST SET UP THAT I HAVE HEARD!! I made clamps out of stainless u-bolts from Home Depot for 3 bucks a piece and used 4 of them. I wrapped the u-bolts with friction tape so the box couldnt shift at all. 80 feet out now has a box that holds 6 61/2" speakers. Check them out. Well worth it if you ask me. They come primered and the speaker wholes already cut out. For an extra 150 you can get a car quality paint job to match your boat exact.

SUPER COOL!!!!

20vplayer, they are not even close to the most expensive setup out there.
If you want a reasonably priced setup, and probably have the loudest setup on your lake (unless someone has NVS!), check out ElectroVoice EVID 6.2's. They can be had for around 500 a pair and use professional components designed to project sound for long distances unlike car audio components that were designed to project sound for a few feet. The only drawback to the EVID is the lack of a mount, something that can be easily overcome with some ingenuity.
Here is my personal ranking of tower speakers (top 4+):
BEST (by a mile, not even a contest): www.nvs1.net
BETTER: www.fusionwake.com or Warlock's Neo-Bullets
GREAT: (EVID) www.electrovoice.com
GOOD: Quad 6x9's (you pick the MFG)
GET THE JOB DONE: 6.5 Cans (again, you pick the MFG)

I recently bought 4 of Raul's cans and clamps. A friendly word of advice from my experience is that they can become significantly more expensive than you can imagine.
I bought the cans thinking I was going to install cheapo speakers in them and found that the MB Quarts were the only speakers with grills large enough to not leave the lip of the can exposed. After everything was said and done, I've spent about $1K for the 4 cans (way more than I intended to). A simple list of items I purchased:
- 350.00 for 4 cans & clamps shipped (good deal)
- 560.00 for 4 MB Quart PCE 216's (good deal considering they are $1K for the pair at MSRP)
- 40.00 for connections (radio shack)
- 40.00 for Dynamat
- xx.xx quite a few hours getting the speakers situated and components mounted, not to mention time spent at hardware store getting foam, velcro, etc.

Tranner, exactly. You may want to post that as a seperate thread - not as a discouragement, but as an FYI to all those who tackle that seemingly simple project.
A while back, oshensurfer posted up the entire process, and he did mention that only those particular MB's fit the cans perfectly, but I think it is easily forgotten. He also spent quite a bit to do up those cans, albeit less than you but he had direct access to Raul...

Chavez, I plan to make a post to inform everyone once I have pictures available. I hope I didn't discourage anyone from buying Raul's stuff because it trully is a great/beautiful product and I highly recommend it if you don't mind tackling the project.
I actually used Oshensurfer's pictures and write up as my main resource when I built mine. I think he mentioned he spent about $545 for two speakers. I spent about double for four so we are both pretty close.

Tranner:
I have the same cans from Raul with the MB Quart speakers and even though they took some time and cost a bit more then I thought they would I am completely happy. Similiar setups from an actual wake company cost quite a bit more then the set up that you and I have. I can even hear the cans very nicely from 70 ft back when I adjust the fade to the tower speakers. All in all it was a pain but at least it gave me something to do during the winter months to get me amped up to ride. My total cost was around $375 for 2 of the 6.5 cans with the MB Quart 216s.

| Watsoc, don't get me wrong. I love the sound the MB's produce. I haven't tested it on the water yet but I walked about 100+ feet away and you could hear everything very clearly.

No worries, I just wanted to point out that Raul's cans worked out great for me. I am sure you will love them once you get them on the water. Speakers are all personal opinion anyways so as long as I am happy then thats all good for me. Hope you enjoy your setup and all that hard work and money in getting them together will be worth it.

NVS uses pro audio speakers and are an 8 or 10" midrange and horn tweeter. They are designed to project over 100 dB at 100 ft easily with a 200-400 wpc amp. I recommed you have a sub mounted in the boat.
I jsut signed on as a dealer, so let me know if you want a set. They are expensive, but you get all the value for the buck.

Dont know where this fits in price wise but I've got can sets loaded with Tube Acoustics 6.5 coax drivers starting at $400, and loaded with MBQuart 116 starting at $530.

Tranner, at 75' you can hear the music, but not with great clarity. I made a point of listening for it behind oshensurfer's boat on Sunday. I should mention that his setup is 4 cans - 2 6 3/4 MB's and 2 5 1/4's. Sounds great up close and gets the job done for the rider.
m3the01, about NVS: see what boarditup said. As for Nvert: they are no more so you won't be seeing their speaker setup anywhere but on Miggity Matts X-star - he has the prototype. (and yes the Nvert screams nearly as loud as the NVS - similar design)

chavez-y-chavez,
Thanks for the kind words. My setup needs MORE POWER though. I think that would make it more better for the rider.
Tranner,
Regarding cost. The 4 cans and all accessories were $545. That was for 2 6.5's and 2 5.25's. Complete.

oshensurfer,
... now I feel like I paid too much. One reason my cost is higher is because I bought 4 of the 6.5 PCE's instead of the RCE's.
Anyway, how much power are you running to the 6.5's?

Sorry, but "best" and "most reasonable" are mutually exclusive.
IMO:
Best = NVS
Most reasonable = whatever you can afford. Don't fall for the MB Quart hype; there are alternatives that sound better for the same price or less.

Swass, I agree with you completely.
Just want to add that the reason the MB's are the preferred speaker for Raul's cans is because they are the only ones that flush up to the can perfectly.

| My opinion is the Evid 6.2's are hard to beat as far as bang for the buck. I bought a pair from a local distributor and threw Raul's clamps on em. They are amazingly loud and clear. I've got under $500 invested.

| That's what we're talking about when we refer to NVS. It's the only company that I know of that offers components designed for our application (i.e., open air (boat)vs. closed space (auto)).

| I see, the NVS systems look like a great choice. Do they have internal crossovers or can you do the crossover in the amp? If I had this setup I would run at least 600 watts just for the mids and another 200 for the horns. Power is everything when you want to project sound across the lake.

| Actually the more I look at the NVS system it becomes clear that it will be a little difficult to optimize the output from your amps without going mono on the tower. How many out their have their tower speakers wired mono vs stereo?

wu343, 600+200 watts is a bit much! The HLCD is so efficient, you need only 300 watts or so (Duane recommends 250-400 per unit) to run each 808 or 1010.
Personally, I would rather have a good amp putting out 300 watts per channel (at 2 ohms - NVS's run at 2.7 ohms stock). Trust me, 600 total watts will be plenty to project sound across the lake and then some.
X-overs are inside - no need to run external. Mono vs. Stereo? I don't think it really matters when you are that far back and that loud.
PS: if you run the units in parallel (mono-bridged-whatever) you will have an effective ohm load somewhere near 1.35 - you best have some serious fans on your amps...

ssactly. That's the main reason I bought them. I got mine for like $115 a pair though so comparably to retail, I got mine for almost 1/2 of retail.
I have the RCE's. I will say that the MBQ's sound really good. The polks though, are less $$ and sound just as good, if not better. Depends on the kind of sound you like cuz the polks are "softer" in my opinion, which I like for interiors, but for towers I want more high capability in a car stereo speaker.
Tranner,
I'm running like 325Watts. Not nearly enough. Especially since I run 1200 to my interior 4+1. You need like a 800+W amp probably. I dunno. Chavez was supposed to hook me up with some recommendations.. He knows this side of audio better than me.
