Hey All,

The happy ending to the story of the weird thing on the end of my shaft was I took a hack saw and cut a slot in the thing parallel with the shaft to weaken it then tapped it off with a hammer...I mounted a new Acme prop and maybe I'll get to splash the boat this weekend!

Wes, is that the woodruff key you are referring to, the small sliver of metal that sits in a groove both in the shaft and the prop and stops the prop from spinning on the shaft?

If so, does the acme not have one too?

Hope you get to wet the boat (and yourself) this w/e.

Hey Jeff,

No I actually cut a slot in the side of the bushing thing parallel to the shaft to weaken it...my initial thought was I could then take a cold chisel and tap it into the slot thus spreading the slot open and expanding the inside diameter of the bushing so it would slide off the shaft. Good news was I didn't even need to chisel on it, it just slipped off once the slot was cut..I never touched the shaft and the associated keyway with the hack saw....

The new Acme is "standard fair" with a proper taper and key way

Oh yeah, I also installed a new throttle/shifter so I'm hoping my wife will be back to her usual quality driving...the old throttle would sort of jump into forward and there was practically no reverse at all...plus it took a zillion foot pounds (let's see, over there that's meter kilograms?) of pressure to coax it into either gear as the thing was completely worn out....

So now all I need to do is re-pack the stuffing box and I should be good for a while...the clean-up list is long, and the "I want" list is lengthy but at least we can board....

Wes
