Super duper ALARM SYSTEM

Hey guys, somebody out there's gotta know the perfect alarm setup. I have a shorestation with a canopy and I don't want my boat robbed. I want it loud and all that but mostly i just want something that will WORK. Come on yall, help me out.

I'm guessing start with an immobilisor, hook that up.. but any thief worth his jail time can knock one out.. especially on a boat with such easy access...

Having just been heisted of ALL my stereo stuff - 1 Sony MP70 HU, 2 Kenwood 4 channel amps, and 1 Kicker Sub amp, I am custom designing my own system. It will have in part, motion sensing and some other clandestine goodies. It's not how to detect --- thats easy - it's the reward of the capture!

I can't go into detail, but there will no doubt be a foolproof system and if the low life scums try again on my new stuff, they will have a very 'uncomfortable' surprise waiting for them.

As are all my DIY projects.... this should rank fairly close to the top when it's all done.

Anyone can make a mistake...only a fool makes the same mistake twice!

I remember awhille back there was an alarm system that worked with the cover. The sensors were in the snaps of the cover, so if someone trys to remove your cover all hell breaks loose. I thought this was a pretty cool idea. Doesn't work for me because I only havea mooring cover.

but with the mooring cover you can simply add a snap of create a snap around the tower instead of or as well as velcro.
Pick up the snap sensor at any decent stereo shop

1. These guys make motorcycle alarms that will page you. It looks mostly like it would be useful from keeping the whole boat from being stolen, but you may find a way to incorporate it into storage access areas that would prevent your stuff from being removed from the boat as well.

I glue razor blades on the back of all my head units, that way if somebody trys to get their fingers back there to unbolt the back strap, most likely they'll cut the crap out of their hands.

use those stainless steel gloves that you get for dealing with fish hooks and cutting things to help you get everything apart or put together, and make sure you warn anybody that might have a reason to be working back there.

Gives you some satisfcation when they try to steal your radio and there's blood on your dash

I'm getting my system installed this week also and too have the concern of some loser trying to come up on my stuff. Some of the above methods seem good. Wondering what I should do? HMMM....

I'm planning on adding an automotive alarm with sensors to pick up when any compartments, at least the ones with goodies, are opened. With the time it would take them to figure out which wire from which battery to rip out or where I plan to hide the system I think they would be ready to move on to an easier target since there will be two sirens blaring.

The razor idea is pretty funny but in this world they could probably sue you for that!

it's amazing that this world has come to the point where somebody stealing your stuff can sue you.

a friend of mine says it the right way...

dead people can't sue.

in other words.. you wake up in the middle of the night and somebody is in your house. you shoot them... make sure you put a knife or something in their hand so that it looks like it was self defense.

A true story, in Lighhouse Point Florida in the late 70's a man, I think in his 70's was woken by two thugs in his house tying up his wife of 45 years after beating her up a little. As they came up stairs and entered their bedroom, without any discrimination, he put three 357' slugs into each of the robbers, killing both of them - DRT, Dead - right there! Like two days later, he put a big wood plaque on his mailbox. It said "Protected by Smith and Wesson". It had two large knotches out of it. I never met him but I love that guy. It was judged self defense.

I think if they would have screwed with his boat, it would have been much worse

I was trying to think of a way you could put some sort of mesh net over the canvas on your boat and padlock it down to each side. I found some stuff online but couldn't find the quantities I needed. I went to home depot and they had some PVC coated fencing that I thought wouldn't be too bad. If you put that over the top they would have to take wire cutters and cut 50 times across the top of your boat before they could get anything. If you had an alarm on top of that there's no way they could do it in time. We decided not to go with it because it would probably lead people to believe we have stuff needing to protect.

At one point I was thinking about the same thing, Wakebrad. But it seemed that it was no good because the mesh only protects if they come through the canvas. Nothing prevents them from cutting the tiedowns to the trailer.

So what we did is made everything so it can come out. We mounted a plywood base raised up off the storage underneath the spotters chair. Then we ran 3" screws up through the plywood as guides for the amps. We mounted the amps on similarly raised pieces of plywood and so now the whole amp comes out. For all the electricals we used strip connectors like you see inside your computer that way we only have one plug instead of one for each speaker. Also makes it so we don't have to figure out everything each time going out. The power/ground wires we have to install on the amps, but we did the same thing with the deck as well as the internal speakers (the mounting bracket screwed into the fiberglass and we use machined screws to hold the speaker in the bracket because selftapping screws would wear out). We also wired up the speakers on the tower to come down easily, and the lightbar portion already has a single plug so that was easy. It takes about 25 minutes to clean out the boat, but it sure beats the hours it would take to get all that stuff replaced. Better safe than sorry...

The best advice i can give is to get a storage unit. EVERY alarm can be bypassed, I used to be a rep for a big car alarm company. I was always paranoid about people stealing something out of the boat... I would think "did i take the head unit out when i got home, are all the boards in the garage, did i forget something". another issue with the boat being outside is how the weather will prematurely mkae the boat old before its time. I used to keep a boat in my driveway to save money... then one wierd Texas weather day it rained and then got below freezing. I ended up spending a few hundred $$$'s to get some cushions reupholstered because they cracked when the water froze. And yes i did have a cover on the boat, it just rained for a long time and some ater seeped through. The money i saved from not having a storage unit ended up going into the boat anyway. Not to mention that the sun does bleach out the hull and that requires a lot more maintenance. Now i keep my boat in storage, wax the hull every year and it looks brand new (it is a a 95 SN).

A big plus is i don't have to take all my equipment out of the boat or put it in the boat every time i want to go to the lake. I just take my tower down, back my boat into the storage unit, lock it up and go.
