ok, this is more of a "i need to double check" type question.
I am making a fat sac pump. and my primary concern is draining the sac when done for the day. Am i safe to assume that if i put the intake hose in the sac that it was suck said water from sac?
like i said i just want to double check.
just so you know , im working with a 600 gph livewell pump.
thanks for any info, pertaining to my lame question. |

You'll have to step on the sack and run water up the hose into the pump to get it to prime if it is an aerator live well pump. 600gph will work as long as you are not filling/draining more that a sack or two.

its only one sack. a 600 pounder.
aframer, the 600 gph should be fine, plus its at my work, i get a discount, so it'll have to work.
and thanks for the info guys |

I read a DIY article about using a livewell pump. It said to install the sack upside-down and have the pump below the sack. That way you don't have to prime it to empty it.
Since these pumps are not reversable, you need two pumps. Water in, and water out. _________________ _______________________________________ |

T&T, good info. im not mounting the pump to the boat. the pump will be moveable. so ill probably have to prime it. which isnt a big deal.
but thats good info for if i do end up mounting it at somepoint. |

I have a little simmer pump hooked to a garden hose. It is one of the $17 Wal-Mart pumps.
To fill, I throw the whole pump out of the boat and into the water and fill the sack through the hose.
To drain, I plug the pump into the sack and throw the hose outside the boat to empty.
I sometimes spill several gallons. not the best way to do it.
I am working on a mounted reversable pump and 3 sacks.
It will be a while before I get this one working.
Hope that helps. _________________ _______________________________________ |

Oh, and a 600gph pump will fill your sack in 7.2minutes if it is pumping at a true 600gph. It will actually pump at about 4-500gph due to losses which will cause it to take about 10minutes.
That's a statistic that I made up on the spot... (referring to your signature)

Actually live in Parker, work on the south side of Denver.
Where in Phoenix? I was spending a bit of time in Tempe and Mesa for work last summer. Love to have a boat there, but sombody told me that there is lots of bad bacteria in the water, is that true? Here the water is finally in the top 60's. Not to complain, our friends north of the border (Canadians) still have shriveled nuts.

im in north phoenix, however i am from Englewood. which was 20 years ago. but anyways. Im not aware of bad bacteria's in the water. My friends dad actually works for the CAP out here. CAP is the water/ canal/ dam people out here. and he has not said anything. We go all the time, and none of us are sick, or getting sick. however it probably depends on the lake. i can only speak for two, pleasant and bartlett.
bartlett is dirty and in murky. but not dirrrty as in christina aguleria(sp)... haha |

I've been tinkering in the garage with an old starter motor and the water pump (actually 2) from an old washing machine. I don't know the rate, but it will clear 30 gallons in a flash.
Trying several ideas to incorporate really quick fills and empty. It's bulky and true Rube Goldberg stuff - but it may have potential.... _________________ Visit my DIY Projects

Hey DiyGuy,
Are you going to belt the washing machine pump off your main engine?

He said "starter motor". I assume that is what he is using to drive it because it's reversable _________________ _______________________________________ |

No worries Wes,
I had to think about it and picture it in my mind with what I had in my garage before I knew what he was talking about. _________________ _______________________________________ |

Starter motors heat up because they are subjected to extreme loads. Remove the load and they run fine. The problem may be that they don't turn enough RPM. It is worth a little research. _________________ _______________________________________ |

T&T, If they dont have the load wont they just spin faster and burn themselves out. _________________ They know what is what but they dono what is what they just strut. |

Water pump will put a smaller load on the starter motor than starting an engine, but yes you are correct, if you don't have enough load, could cause problems. An old wiper motor may work better?? We'll all see what DiyGuy comes up with. I am extremely curious as to the results. _________________ _______________________________________ |

You could just buy an electrice motor from a hardware store like a blower motoro for a central air system they are cheap and will run 24/7/365 _________________ They know what is what but they dono what is what they just strut. |

I feel a need to head to a car junk yard for inspriation!
The pump will definately put out the water, but it must stay below water line (primed)
The starter thing works, but it's really heavy and way overkill.....absolutely no issues with heat or overspeeed though. And when you hit the switch there is so much torque, it's hard to keep it put until it gets up to speed (which is very quick!)
Looking next at the 12 v motors that are used for power windows...second alternative is power seat motors.
aFramer - yes any garden variety motor could work.. most though are 110 volts AC. Grab hold of one of them sometime when you are wet! And, where ya gonna get 110v AC on the boat?
~~~
I'm going for the equivilent of the X-prize (first private co to get to space) on moving water very quickly.
BTW - Burt Rutan and Scaled Composites makes his first attempt on June 21 _________________ Visit my DIY Projects
