That's not great economy...how would it have better "speed holding capabilities"? I can see better 0-30 times, but holding speed?

I gotta say that thing LOOKS pimp though... Wink

No its 30-40% consumption savings plus diesel is cheaper per gallon. So you would be saving quite a bit on gas. As long as the noise, vibration and exhaust aren't bad, and the price isnt to high, you would get a cheaper to run, more powerful and longer lasting engine. Looks cool too.

Diesel is more expensive per gallon here in Cali. My bad on the fuel consumption though. I read it straight from WW. Pwork said " They did say a 30-40% increase in fuel consumption. " and that is what I read...The Marine Diesel USA site differs though.

In North Carolina diesel is 25 to 30 cents cheaper per gallon than gas.

I wonder if they're going to work that out so they can put it in the v-drives.

the low-end torque would be great for wakeboarding with a ton of weight, and the extra weight of the engine would help too.

(I guess I might have to learn how to be a diesel mechanic now too Wink )

We are paying $2.15 for gas (at the pump) and $1.58 for diesel, only concern would be how loud it would be and if the V transes could handle the torque

Diesel does not use oxidizers. It is, however, persistant from an environmental point of view. It is much safer than gasoline for the riders.

If I remember correctly, it's also a lot more stable, as in, much less explosive risk.

can these things run bio-diesel?

I really got to move... We pay... € 1,60 per liter for gasoline... so like € 215 per tanksession... we think about let the engine built into gas, much cheaper but a lot of carrying around...

You know I was wrong about the diesel price. That would fall under the non-highway diesel. You can buy that here for $1.33 per gallon.

It is diesel fuel that they sell for use in equipment that is not run on the highways. You don't have to pay the highway tax on fuel when you don't use it on the highway.

So when are marina's at the lake gonna install diesel tanks? I know here in CA that would become a major issue.

one problem, a diesel engine is expensive....it would take quite some time to see cost benefits. probably longer than any of us would own a single boat.

There have been some interesting articals in the news about diesel fuels lately.
this one talks about making a minor conversion that allows it to run vegetable oil & fueling up for free at resturants, (hard to agrue cost benifits when you could do away with almost all fuel expeses)-- downside, the exhaust smell might give everyone on the lake the muchies..

http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/news/8747125.htm

This one talks about how we could/should make Bio diesel out of alge.. enought for the U.S to heat all homes, run all cars, boats, trucks.. cost after refining is 1/3 of the current price we pay for crude per gallon & 100% renewable (sp?)

http://www.unh.edu/p2/biodiesel/article_alge.html

also from what I've been reading they are about begin a new process that will eliminate 90% of the sulfer in the fuel which will almost eliminate the bad exhaust smell.

If these engines work just as well as our current engines I might consider buying a new boat just to get the diesel.

You are straight up trippin!!! Diesel is way cheaper that regular gas in California. I've bought in San Francisco, Sac and Truckee in the past three weeks and its always cheaper.

nag nag nag..... All boatowners in europe pay at least twice as much for gas.

gas prices will go up get used to it,why would they build a diesel anyway?
Waterski/wakeboard fanatics/school/clubs in europe will be very happy with the diesel option and it will be my choice too if i,ll buy a new boat or just buy new diesel engines.

Jane it is called a propane conversion..Pm me if you want some details about cost etc etc...you start saving money after 90--110 boat hours.i know some good places where they do conversions
there are also lightwieght composit LPG tanks that stay under 25 kg.

The question being...

How long does it take before the upfront cost for the diesel powerplant pays for itself? And do you really plan on having your boat that long?

Just to throw some numbers around how much is a diesel engine in a truck compared to a regular gasoline engine? I assume a marine diesel will be more expensive than the automotive equivalent.

Is it financially viable to use diesel at this point on recreation boats?

Anyone thinking along these lines?

Nor*Cal-
Getting the diesel in my truck was another $3k vs. going with the stock gas motor.

A diesel in a wakeboard boat makes sense to me as the added weight is good and diesel is cheap! As far as noise is concerned, if the diesel motor has the common rail fuel system (makes the motors a lot quieter - try standing next to a Chevy DuraMax or a 2003+ Dodge with the cummins), then the noise won't be an issue.

I think for people like me (my boat is 15 yrs old), then I'd have time to recover my costs, but for people who trade their boat in every 2-3 yrs, I don't think that is enough time.

I think we are all looking over th emost important point by far:

Each time you launch you boat, you start it and give it a little gas in neutral. Your big V8 sounds kick ass and frightens the hell out of that guy in the little 14 foot trawler next to you. you also get that extra little kick out of listening to that throbbing engine... But if its a diesal Boat you'll just sound like a Tractor! Evil or Very Mad

I'd rather pay the extra just to be able to keep sounding good and for that rush of excitement when i turn the key Cool

Hmmm...I disagree Brit Rider...I like pulling up next to the dudes in the tahoes/yukons and having them look over their shoulder b/c they think a tractor trailer is pulling in next to them...

Just my opinion though...

ooooo-aaarrr, whats be wrong with sounding like a tactor. You could have the wurzles playing in the background, speak in a nice summerset accent Laughing

Just take the easy option people, change to propane or natural gas. Its way cheaper.
