if i have a size nine foot what do you think i should go with s/m sizes 4-9 or l/xl 9-12

It depends on the shape of your foot. If you have a low volume foot (low instep, narrow forefoot) go with the s/m. If you have a high volume foot (high instep, wide foot) go with the l/xl. "Size 9" refers to the length of your foot. Since wakeboard bindings have open toes the length doesn't matter much. Companies use shoe size on their size charts to give you a ROUGH idea of what size you should be in.

x vegan x, I agree,
but it also depends on the bindings. By the sounds of it I'd say you're looking at Liquid Force bindings (although I'm not sure which one...like I said, depends on the binding.

if he doesnt have the option, you should go with what you prefer, do you like loose and relaxed or tight and supportive

If you are talking about liquid force, i would order and extra large. I ve got 9.5 feet and the larges are way too small. Confused
