Posted: Feb 25, 2003 1:19 pm Post subject: Adding Wheels to Trailer Prop Guard |
|
|
I have a steep driveway and would like to add some wheels onto the prop guard to keep it from dragging. I've noticed that some newer trailers already have them installed and would like to make mine similar. Does anyone have any closeup photos of the the factory installed wheels? Any other options would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Looks easy enough to add. Just get the wheel and some flat bar.
Phaeton is that rudder polished?

Nor*Cal, You bet. I couldn't stand the rough casting.
You are correct just weld on some flat bar. I had to paint the back of the trailer but that was easy to do.

Thanks for the pic Phaeton. I have a Dorsey trailer and I believe the curve on the prop guard will not allow me to mount it the same way you did. I think I will have to add 2 vertical pieces of flat bar to each side (on on the outside and the other next to the prop guard) to get the clearance that I need. However, you pic is helpful in helping with the connection to the trailer.
Also, I am using some wheels off of an old floor jack. I had them laying around and thought I could use them. They are cast but I think they will work.
Thanks Wes and Phaeton.

I believe I'm going to have to do a combination of Phaeton's mount and the "crued drawing." Phaeton, I've revised your drawing to give an idea of what I'm going with. Think this is a good solution? Also, should I weld both mounts or bolt both in place?
Thanks,

If your going to break out the welder then you might as well weld it all.

jroyal,
Dorsey offers prop gaurd wheels as a factory option, it may be easier just to call them and see if they will ship you the parts required, then won't have to design and fabricate anything yourself, just weld and paint.

If you have an RV store near you you can probably find the stainless steel casters they use on the back of big RV's. Those might hold up better that the rubber casters.
Phaeton- Did you polish the center tracking fins also? I like the rudder all polished.

Nor*Cal, the center fins are polished also.
The wheels are not rubber they are a nylon composite. They don't leave black marks and work awesome.

| I welded the rv steel rollers on the back and the keel but that still was not enough, they were groving my asphalt driveway,I even cut about an inch off the prop guard lenght. What I finally ended up doing was adding a three inch lift kit.It raised the look of the fenders but at least its not cutting up my drive way.The ride and tracking are good when pulling. Its a tandom dhm trailer.

Pheaton,
Where did you get the wheels from? I looked this weekend and wasn't able to find anything I thought was strong enough.

I purchased mine through a trailer manufacturer. Do a search on the net and you will be able to find what your looking for.

Can you post a link for Dorsey, please. Think I want to call them for parts as well.
