When I took the boat out a few days ago I notice about a six inch hairline crack on one of the exhaust manifolds. My question is there anyway to fix this?? From what I understand the metal is "pot metal" and cannot be welded. The crack isn't dripping water or sperting water, just kinda wetness around the crack. Will any type of jb weld work or will I have to just get new ones???

Jb weld should work I don't think there's much pressure on the manifold so you should be ok. There are also a lot of other types of compunds that work like JB weld. Go to the local hardware store and check it out.

JB weld might work- I've heard of people using that. I'd give it a try and see what comes of it, but keep an eye on the patched spot- since it could crack again.

On another note- I thought pot metal was cheap aluminum? To my knowledge, manifolds are only made from iron or steel, sice exhaust temps are high enough to melt aluminum..

Mine is cast iron. Get a high nickel content welding rod clean off the paint and go at it. Such as this one

if it cracked from this winters follies, i would remove the manifold and test the exhaust passage. a couple pieces of plywood bolted to the flanges will work.

a leak in the water jacket may be welded back up, but a leak into the exhaust is bad juju.

manifolds are cheap. connecting rods are not. Cool

cwbwakeboarder,
Is the prop in your avatar switching directions or is it just my eyes?

I was thinking the same thing as tryan. Have them pressure tested or replaced. If there is a bigger crack inside letting water into your engine exhaust and therefore into your pistons, it would eat them up. Maybe no problem, but better safe than sorry.

wes reeves, depends how you look at it. close your eyes, open them, and look at the right side of your screen. Now look from right to left, looking just above the prop... it'll spin counter clockwise. Do the opposite by closing your eyes, look to your left, and then to the right... it'll spin clockwise. Its all in how your eye percieves it! Very Happy

cwbwakeboarder,
I don't know I just did a search on google to find a welding rod real quick.

wes reeves,
The prop rotates 45 degrees every frame. I think it is actually two pictures flipping back and forth so I think it is how you percieve it. But it sure is fun to look at. Very Happy

It can be welded by someone who really knows how to weld. I bought a boat that was like that and had it welded. The weld will not last more than a year or so. you will eventually have to replace the manifold. just depends on now or later.

mine cracked there too. i just choose not to look at it, out of sight out of mind. nothing has happened yet and it has been there quite awhile. oh and some manifolds are pot metal and cannot be welded, jb weld is a waste of time if you really want to fix it get a new manifold.

I had an i/o til just recently, the manifold had been welded more than three years ago (bout when i bought it) and no problems, however when i traded it in the dealer found that it still had a hairline crack in it, welded it up fairly reasonably priced.
