Josh- slavery was not an issue at all when the civil war started. The civil war started because the south was pissed because no one in the south voted for lincoln and he still became president. so they decided they didnt have any say in the gov't and suceeded form the union. the north said you cant do that and they decided to start a war. the south wanted france and britain's help in fighting and france said they would help if britain would and britain said we will help if it's not about slavery and if you win one major battle on northern territory. lincoln knew this so he made the emancipation proclamation that freed slaves in all states not in compliance with the union. do you knwo how many slaves this freed? 0. This came after the battle at antietam because neither side could be satisfied with the outcome and lincoln was afraid it was enough to win the support of france and britain. so this is how he brought slavery into it.
the reason lincoln got elected to president in the first place was his neutral stance on slavery. |

| wes the reason no one in the south voted for him was because they knew he was against slavery so when he was elected they knew he was going to outlaw therefore they suceded --as nor cal said--it all leads back to slavery |

It is the Soldier,
not the reporter who has given us freedom of press
It is the Soldier,
not the poet who has given us freedom of speech
It is the Soldier,
not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

the only reason lincoln was elected is because slavery split the democratic party between the north and the south. lincoln never took a side on slavery and ran on a campaign of popular sovereignty.
you could say it leeds back to slavery in the sence that that is why lincoln was elected but he was not for or against slavery. |

I'm not arguing that Lincoln was the Great Emancipator. In fact Wes is correct he didn't take a stance on Slavery until he was in office. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

| Once he was in office he still wasnt against slavery. When General David Hunter abolished slavery in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Lincoln revoked Hunter's proclamation. It was then that Lincoln was forced to consider seriously abolishing slavery and he wanted to give the slaveholders payments for their lost property and send the slaves outside the u.s. to haiti and liberia. |

I'm basing my knowledge on a survey course freshman year of college. I'm more into the Civil Rights movement in the 20th century. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

| i see what you mean now that it all comes back to slavery though cause lincoln was elected essentially because the slavery issue split the democrat's vote and lincoln was elected which made the south feel like they had no say in the election which led them to succeed which led to the civil war. |

OK- I actually like this discussion now that it has some good info going.
Wes I'd like to work through this debate some more. I'm just drawing blanks right now. Let me find my crap from freshman year and get refreshed. I like where this is headed. Most people overlook the multiple factors that are at hand in every issue. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

You know what affirmitive Bubb Rubbing action is: Deciding you want to go to college, going to your financial aid office and signing up. Thats affirmitive action pinhead. Any door knob has the same chance of going to college, in fact the poorer the better and what the Bubb Rubb does race have to do with anything. _________________ Raley cut everything! |
