Yet another speaker wiring question

I searched past posts and didn't really find an answer for my specific question.
I have a Kicker L5 10" Solobaric Sub. It has dual voice coils. The rating is 450 Watts RMS and 900 Watts peak.
My AMP is a Sony XM-D1000P5 Mono Class-D Amp. It's output at 2 Ohms is 900 Watts RMS and 1600 Watts peak. At 4 Ohms it's 500 Watts RMS.
Here are my questions:
For this dual voice coil sub, is the rating 450 Watts RMS total or is it 450 per coil (900 Watts RMS total)? If the rating is per coil, problem solved.
If it is a total Wattage rating, what can I do to make sure I dont blow the speaker (Other than going in series at 8 Ohms which I really would like to avoid)? Can I wire the voice coils in parallel and then wire in a resistor somewhere to bring it back to 4 Ohms or will that kill the sound quality? I also thought about installing lower rated fuses on the amp so they blow instead of the sub if I get a little heavy handed on the volume. Fuses are cheap. As you experts can probably tell, I don't know much about this stereo stuff.

how about running it in paralell and turning the gain down to about half way, and the bass on the head unit down a tad, if you have your mono amp running off of a seperate sub out RCA from the head unit, you should be able to lower that sound some too, that way you dont blow the speaker, but I can tell you that that amp does not put out what it says it does it is a little lower, but not alot lower...
