Hehheeheh..next time someone complains about their drink, grab it from them, throw it out and walk away. The look on their face is worth it. They usually can't believe what you just did.

On a side note, I think it is every bartenders duty to train their friends how to treat other bartenders. I have one friend who would ask me how he could get a bartender's attention in a crowded bar. I told him on the first round, tip big. A good bartender will remember your tip and your drink and if you continue to be polite and consistent, buy you a round or two over the course of the evening. Now, he calls me all the time with his little stories of taking care of the bartenders out there. I train them well!!!! If only everyone was so willing Puppy Eyes

The only thing that sucks is when you are waiting for a drink forever and some hot girl walks up to the male bartender and gets a drink and it keeps happening. Ive learned i have to have my friends that are girls get me drinks at certian bars.

yes wake152, that is true and some what wrong. but hey i like to look at boobs just as much as you do. so if they come up to the bar that is the only chance i get, you get to dance and rub up on them. see my point.

DP-Some people just don't know. They don't get it. And they wonder why they get such losey service or weak drinks.

152-You are right, depends on the bar. If I am super busy, I don't care who is there or what people look like. I go down the line and then start back at the beginning. I try to keep it as fair as possible. Sometimes people catch on to what I am doing and biotch out the people who try to cut in the line. The only people I truly hook up are my friends or friends of friends.

Here is another funny story. During happy hour, we have certain drinks that are $2 plus free appetizers. Well, this couple comes in all the time-an older couple. They always order 3 rounds of the $2 drinks during happy hour and scarf up all of the free food. That is fine and all but they only tip a dollar-for the entire night. That is after ordering six drinks and eating heaps of food. After seeing them come in over the last six months and repeatedly getting stiffed, I told my manager the next time they come in, I was going to say something to them directly. My manager was all for it. So they came in last week. The guy bought the first round of his drinks and of course, stiffed me. I didn't say anything because I knew he would be back for another round. So he comes back and right when I take his money, I stop and asked him if there was something wrong with my service...ever. He said no way and insisted that I always took very good care of him and his wife. I told him the reason why I was asking is because tipping was based on service and over the course of the last few months of them coming in, there were many times when he wouldn't tip me at all. I told him that I wanted to make sure it wasn't because I was giving him poor service. You know what he said? "I know, I am cheap. Sorry" I then told him that I just wanted to make sure that it was him and not something I was doing wrong or lacking.....I think it was worth it to have him admit that he was cheap. I told my manager and he couldn't believe that the guy admitted to being cheap. I wonder if they will still come into the bar now? If I were them, I would be embarassed, but then again I always tip so I would never have to worry about that!!

Wake152-Trust me, it gets old when it happens to you on a regular basis. Bartenders rely on their tips to pay rent, make car payments, etc. My feeling on the whole issue: if you can't afford to go out then stay at home. Plain and simple.

I started bartendin back in August and I love it. Despite the few bad apples, I get some pretty freakin cool people coming in and a lot of regulars that reward me handsomly. Some even come bearing gifts!!!!! Very Happy

You def always gain respect after working in a job where most your money comes from tipping. We go out sometimes with a bunch of immature girls that never tip so I always feel bad and end up trying to tip for all of them. But I decided just to stop going out with them all together.

I agree. Now having a job in the service industry, you gain a huge level of respect for all the others who are doing the samething. If I go out and people don't tip (with what I feel is enough) I will generally always leave more myself.

Most of your money comes from tips? Is that standard in the US? That sucks....

In Australia bartenders get paid fairly well, $10.00 an hour minimum starting wage (unless you are doing a traineeship, then its less). I never accepted tips, they always went into the charity bin if people insisted on giving them to me. Its funny, the more you refuse a tip, the more people try to give them too you. The locals are awesome!

Yup that is the standard here, at least it is in California. We get paid a low minimum wage of $6.75 an hour. The rest of are wages all depends on the tips we receive from our patrons.

Oh and when you are in training (which usually last anywhere from two to four shifts), you don't get a cut of the tips AT ALL. Just the hourly minimum wage. At least that is the way it is at the bars I have trained at.....Sucks huh? It pays for itself in the end though. I love my job. Smile

It is a pretty good job isn't it, Pchick.

I would rather work in a bar with regulars than a nightclub who's crowd is a group of snobbish people who you never see again though. Regulars are good!

Crim-No doubt. It is the best job ever. I love the schedule-working nights doesn't effect my riding time at all. I have the luxury of working at a bar that is in both a restaurant and nightclub. I get my regulars during the week and then get the club crowd and concert crowd on the weekends. I like the variety. It is worth the extra hassle. At least I have some interesting stories to tell. Entertainment is priceless!

Regulars are a bartenders bread and butter!

Good point.

yeah, i also like evening/night work, it gives you heaps of time to ride! (Although it means I'm always tired and sunburnt when I come to work!) One time I was REALLY sunburnt, like almost sunstroke burnt, so I spent all night hiding in the cool room.... heaven!

Ice is gooood......

Do you drink a lot on the job (I mean water or redbull or OJ)... I used to find myself drinking 2 liters of OJ and 2 or 3 cans of redbull on a busy night... you get so dehydrated.

When I first started bartending, I would drink all the time (alcohol). We are allowed to drink while we work if we want to. Management is way cool. But after drinking all the time, numerous hangovers and many mornings wondering where my car was, I cut down my drinking down to nearly niltch...Now I stock up on bottled water.
