You remember how I had a pnumothorax (sp?) a few years ago, and you gave me some info on it,

Well, I had another one about 2 weeks ago. Thankfully it was only 8% (instead of 50!), so it fixed it self, but they told me they no longer put that huge hose inside you anymore, they do it with a needle.

Have you heard of this, and can you explain it to me? I sounds a lot easier to handle!

I read that you had another episode. Nice to know it was a very small Pneumothorax.
Large bore needles ( 18 gauge or large) have always been used in the past to help pull air out of the lungs. This is in hope that the lung will seal back to the inner suface of the thoracic cavity. There is another smaller tube that I have used in the past is called a "Pneum Dart" (as one of the Thoracic Fellows referred to it as) this can be attached to a Heimlich valve or wall suction
The only reason to use the large tubes is due to the failure of the Bore Needle and/or Dart.
Hope this helps. Are your pneumos occuring in the same lung and around the same area? Sometimes stapling the lung may help decrease recurrence.

Umm.. the first time it happened (right lung) was the time I went into hospital. They had the big tube and the wall suction unit. They sealed it with the talcum powder, so apparently that one can't go again.

I have been having pain in my left one ever since, it hurts like hell for a while, then goes away and is sore for a few days. I never took much notice. Then about 2 weeks ago it was worse than ever, I knew something was different so I drove to emergency, and they told me I had a another pneumothorax. They also said it appeared that I had had at least 5 in my left lung before (dunno how they could tell), so I guess it keeps bursting and I was just ignoring it.

I sure as hell won't ignore it in the future!

Thanks for the info Phantom, I wasn't really paying attention to the Doc's in emergency after they gave me pain killers!
