| IM going to build my own platform, and was talking to a few guys at local marina's and they suggested using cedar 1x2's instead of teak, and just using teak oil and urethane to finish, do you guys have any idea's on alternative woods to use vice Teak?

i was told today by a guy who sold teak ($400 total to make a 22"x6') he told me to look at eucaliptys he said it is just as strong, just as durrable, looks better when oil applied, and will last just as lonkg with the same care ($50 total) he said he has used it on his cuddy cabin to replace teak as the old got worn out, and has been complemented, and built a few platforms for people around 5-6 yrs ago and they are still looking good, oil once and eurethane

| My uncle makes furniture and anything else with wood. If you go to Monster towers web site and look at customer photos, you can see my platform made from red wood. It looks awesome and has not fadded. The screws, washers and nuts are galvanized so that it wont rust. I used the base bars from my fiberglass platform. Its a 1996 Malibu tantrum with tribal graphics. My platform looks as good as any that I have ever saw.

well, i ran into another problem tonight when i was doing some measuring, with my outboard in the full up position, i can only have a platform like 16 inches out from the transom, and on top of that the transom is very curvaceous so it dosent look as though i will be able to mount it even once i build it, so damn.....

Seems I heard the eco terrorists have made it all but impossible to get redwood anymore - Forbid anyone thinking of cutting down a redwood tree.....
So, let's use some more petroleum based materials or caustic/toxic resins and epoxies to make one out of fiberglass/graphite, etc.
Makes NO sense.

I would make a patern of the back of you boat using cardboard. Then see if you can trace that on one peice of wood, then use a router to cut the line. Sand it down, seal, and your set.

DiyGuy how long does a Redwood take to grow? I'm not being stupid we don't have redwoods here so I don't know. We have Kauri trees here which are 500 to 2000 years old, I'm no greeny but I wouldn't cut one down for any reason. Not when you can grow a pine in 25 years.

| Show us a picture of your transom and the area you want to build the swim step. I built one many years ago for my old outboard boat. I used Ramin (an Asian cheap teak) that worked well when I built a flap that allowed the Outboard to rise and lift a center section of the step. This allowed me to adjust trim and trailer the boat.

ok, i got an idea to fix the prob, i can still be 16 inch's out in the middle, so im going to make one that goes out on sides, and indents in the middle portion.....
what do I use to hold it in position though? triangle style supports or just a leg that goes from a little more than mid point to bottom of transom, if i use that, how do i keep the platform against the transom?

I built a platform for my Bayliner classic. I built it solid and mounted high enough that you could trim the motor up and it would just touch the platform. The platform was about a 1" out fo the water once we got weight into her.

Hell, you sink that mutha real deep if your platform is only an inch outta the water when loaded
How much weight/how many peeps do you need to achieve that? Or is it all at the stern and the bow is 6 feet out of the water

Enlighten us. |
look at scarabs and foutians, im pretty shure they are I/O's and they shure as hell make more power than a standard 310-335 hp V8.
therefore I/O's have more power.
on another note, CM, hows the engine rebuild going?

Actualy outboards push the most power/horse look at a 225 outboard engine smoke a 310 hp inboard..

I/O's and outboards have greater top end speed, fact.
I'm not saying one is better than the other (God knows I'd love a V-Drive if I could afford it), and I agree when Scrogg Dogg says better wakes and (generally speaking when it comes to Wakeboarding applications) better boats, however 'better power' is a total fallacy. Holeshot on an Inboard is better due to the placement of the prop however this has nothing to do with power. I/O's and Outboards have the advantage of trim which allows a greater variation of speed once you hit top revs, by lifting the bow clear of the water. They are different, but neither has 'better power'.
Dragon, the rebuild hit a bump last weekend, I had 3 days off to do the whole thing but when I went to the reconditioners to pick up the crank and rods (which they have had for 3 weeks!) It turns out they didn't have the right sized rings. Jerks! Anyway now I have to wait for some more time off before I can get it done. It's killing me!
Sorry to jack your thread guys, continue please.

Hello cstmgsxr,
I build a temporary swim platform out of cedar, stained and sealed it, to get an idea of what it would look like(shape wise) before I plunge into the expense of building a teak one.
Then I fabricated some brackets to mount it to my transom(interesting situation). I am going to the river(Parker/Havasu) this week starting this weekend, so I'll have some pics of it in the water when I get back. But here's what I have for now.
Sorry about all the attachments, just proud of it and wanted to share.
