Wow, your parents will get you a car? And all you have to do is have a job? Regardless of how much it pays? I guess you've got some nice parents. Go get a job at McDonalds or Burger King and then go hug both your parents and tell them that you love them.

Also pet shops for cleaning out the cages...

Check with your local recreation department. Not sure what the town you live in is like, but the rec department in my town was a great source of jobs for younger people growing up. Also, any golf courses nearby? I'm not sure what the age requirements there would be, but when I worked greens and grounds one summer in college there were a lot of high school guys working there too. If you know someone in construction who would let you help out, Nor*Cal is right. It is a good way to start making money and the skills you will learn will help you out the rest of your life.

grocery stores hire baggers that are 16 and up

but you're right, it's hard to find any kind of decent job when you're under 18.

anarchy99, actually grocery stores start at 14. A golf course is a great place to work at. Or become certified as a lifeguard<--which is easy and pays great. Or you could work at a movie theater or restaurant (sit down type).

Construction is good if you actually do stuff. But if you don't actually do anything then (basically bitch work) then you won't learn as much and you won't learn any lifelong skillz----if its just for the summer.

You could detail cars or work as a car dryer at a car wash. From what my friends have told me, you can make a lot of money doing that.

IMO, be a lifeguard.

Just start selling drugs and tell your parents that the money is coming from a "real" job.

Most Vet offices will hire 15 and 16 y/o to walk dogs and scoop poop. Its not the most glamourous job but it usually pays above min wage.

What about being a lifeguard? I'm a lifeguard at a local pool, its an AWESOME job, all i do is sit, get a tan, and watch chicks (I also might check up the swimmers from time to time). It pays really well, the only problem is you have to get certified.

Yeah. In the US it isn't hard. Heaven forbid we should discriminate against somone who is not capable of being a life guard by...... hmmm.... ? not letting them be a life guard perhaps?

If I'm ever drowning and need to be rescued I'll hope that I happen to be in Canadian waters where a REAL life guard who had to pass some REAL certification is the one who's going to attempt to save me. Last I heard the Canadian tests were a LOT harder than in the states.

A little off topic. I just watched an Animal Channel show about JellyFish and how the most dangerous ones were located in Australia.
Well they were talking about the lifeguards and that they wear pantyhose over their speedos for protection.
Can any of you Aussie boys confirm this?

anarchy99, That's what was shown tonight on the Animal Planet's Extreme - Animals that sting.
It was the very end of the show that discussed protection against the Box Jellyfish.

anarchy99, Nope not me.....They actually had a Aussie Lifeguard putting on the hose and running into the water. I guess the "HotDog on a Stick" hat/cap is also part of the uniform. Wink

I haven't heard that "speedos are dope" in the US either.

For me to get certified, I had to go through a 7 day, 5 hour a day class. It was worse then school with one, 15 minute break in the middle of the class each day for lunch. Before the class we had to swim 500 yards (which wasn't bad for me because i'm a distance competitive swimmer). We had like, 6 tests and if you get less than 80%, you get one more chance or you fail and have to take the entire class again. My earlier post was slightly sarcastic, I really do know whats going on, quite well in fact.

Like BillJ said, 16 and up - in CA and every other state I know of. Be a courtesy clerk at a grocery store kid - in most places they get a decent wage and you are usually busy all day so you won't be bored with it. Also, unlike a lifeguard or other recreation services job, it's year round employment.

chavez-y-chavez, I should have added to that...that applies to grocery stores here. I still keep my vote with the lifeguard job. You'd make twice as much and work outside, which that alone is reason enough to guard IMO rather than work in a grocery store.

If you make twice as much (say guarding), then you half to work half as long. ie. 3 months of summer as opposed to half the year. Plus, if you are certified as a guard, then that training is something you can carry with you for the rest of your life.

There is such a thing as an indoor pool you know. Confused

Or at least until it is time to renew your certification again...... Rolling Eyes

anarchy99, check out MMI if you really want to build motorcycles. You wont be building yet but many of my friends go there and a lot have found work after graduation. Pay isn't that good being just a mechanic, though. Also go to a moto shop and get a cashier or parts job.

As for work now check out Wal Mart, target and K Mart. They all hire HS kids.

Dave W, well you may not be certified anymore but you'll still carry with you the lifesaving techniques that you learned and used.
