........so long as it is WAR Related:

Quote:
"In a statement, Lund University in southern Sweden said the U.S. Department of Defense was supporting the Swedish Parkinson's study because the findings could be used to treat similar neurological illnesses caused by battlefield toxins."

http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/reuters20040317_178.html

Stem Cell Research to help sick citizens?...NO WAY.

Stem Cell Research for the BATTLEFIELD.....OKAY!!!!

Thats crazy man, you just can do it in one area. You should be able to use it for everyone. On the other hand its good that he decided this because its the first step to it becoming fully legal.

marcg, your topic title is too broad. Did Bush sign on the dotted line and authorize the funds????

I highly doubt it.

I doubt he signed anything so I changed it Very Happy

So "Federal Funds" (which Bush said would be never used for this) vs. the $240,000 that the Pentagon gave are completely different....I am not informed on which bucket this comes out of and fail to see the loophole here with Pentagon Money vs. Federal Funding.....it looks like it all eventually comes out of the same bucket to me.

marcg, I'm guessing that once he (Bush) sees this going on, he will stop it.

I should add that I believe stemcell research is the future and do not agree with the Bush administration's stance on it. There is so much potential that we are not exploring because of the political BS.

Not necessarily. Bush took his stance based on surveys of our populace and the Religous Right. As a politician, he had to take some kind of stance.

Now, stem cell research has great possibilities, so foreign funding is not out of the question.

Let's remember, he did not ban stem cell research, just stem cell research from unborn babies, if I recall correctly.

That's not what the article says, but they might be wrong.

Quote:
President Bush has forbidden the use of federal funds to manipulate or create human embryos for research and limited scientific research to a few existing batches of cells taken from fertility clinic leftovers.

Opponents, including Bush, say any use of a human embryo amounts to murder and is unethical. Critics are pushing for legislation in the United States that would outlaw the practice completely.

Ok, the second quite is what I remember and verifies the first quote. Old age may be destroying my brain, but I believe there were 17 "leftovers" available.

Military funds are OK'd by Congress so this may be a bad situation for the White House and Pentagon.

Possibly the "Federal Funds" were the pool for grants in research. I don't know.

Leggester, I wasn't trying to bash on you - I really think that the reporter may have mis-quoted or mis-stated. I thought he said what you said he said. Wink

No, no, I understand. I really couldn't quite remember! REally!

Also, I just got into it on WW. I probably came across a bit crooked on this one.

JUST TO CLEAR THIS UP FOR EVERYONE... The President cannot spend any money. All funds must be authorized by Congress then the President has the power of VETO. Given the OMB has major influence but without Congressional APPROVAL nothing gets spent!!!

All I can say is that there's a lot of important research being delayed by this banning on stem cell hullabaloo.
There are so many babies being born everyday via Cesarean section, getting stem cells is done after the umbilical cord is cut and before the placenta is removed.
Easiest way to get your specimen without having to inflict unnecessary pain.

That just doesnt sound right! Twisted Evil

Anyhow, I agree with you 100%!!! This research can only have a positive effect on the medical world - people are so close minded about the research <- they believe we are killing babies to do it which is just not true!

chavez-y-chavez, I guess you've never been involved nor witnessed a C-section. But the day you do, you'll know what I'm talking about Wink

and another FYI - Being a Bone Marrow donor is not a PAINLESS procedure. Giving a little bit of blood for getting on the national list of Donors is not the same thing as going in and having the marrow harvested.

We're getting closer and closer to finding that "fountain of youth". Pretty soon we'll be able to live forever.

And that's just what this world needs, a species of complete morons who don't die.
