We're having a disscussion on our message board about this and I wanted to see what others thought on here.

http://www.dallaswakeboarding.com/discus/messages/2/2053.html

What are the signs of to much weight(Ballast) in a boat? Signs being...does the Hull crack?...Does the engine blow up?...transmission go out?...bent shaft/prop?...I'm not talking about the obvious.."well water will come in the boat over the sides...and it will sink"

Who has had boat problems that was DIRECTLY caused by to much weight in the boat? and what happened?

.......Comments...?........?

Two immediate signs would be the boat not planning very quickly or at all, and water coming in over the bow when you hit another boat's wake a low speed.

At university we've done quite a bit of studying on overloaded vessels and engines, and basically, as bluefish stated, the boat not planing at all is the be all and end all of this practice. However, one must think of the poor transmission and engine, under all of that load too, and as long as your boat plane's the load on the engine and transmission getting out of the hole is enormous.

The good news is that this problem can, in part be remedied by changing to a higher(?) pitch prop, letting the engine rev 'free'er' but inhibiting top speed.

Generally the rest of the boat should be able to handle it, the hull, the prop and shaft and such should not really be too affected by the extra weight

when it takes a long time for the boat to plane out then u have too much weight. maybe try shifting some of it to the front.

The only time I would say that I have ever had too much weight is the time I had 3,600lbs of weight in a 2001 Super Air and 14 people. We had to have 10 of the people in the bow to get it off plane. It was a great wake though. My friend Zack was the only one who got to ride it. He loved it. After his run, 6 of the people left, and we rode for the rest of the day. I think that 3,600lbs and about 9 people is a good max. Any more and it just gets ridiculous.

is weight really a factor for the transmission? I can understand how it would be in a car, because under a load, the gears cannot turn easily. But in water, whether there is a million pounds or no weight at all, the prop is still going to spin...so unless something causes stress directly on the prop (running aground etc), does it really make a difference on the tranny?

Your right Preston. It really isn't that much harder on the engine. The prop will just push the water under you boat instead of pushed the boat forward. It is an increased torque, but not enough to were it should be a concern. Think about it, when you first gun your engine up to like 4000 RPM and your boat isn't on plane or moving that fast, your prop is still spinning that fast because there is a direct connection from it you engine, it's pushing the water under your boat instead of your boat. As time goes by, it slips less and your boat goes. Boats are much less stressful on their engine and powertrain than cars.

Noting that the connection to your engine is direct, there's no clutch or torque convertor. Now let's say you to plane your boat out you go to 4000 RPM. You add a bunch of weight, and now it takes a long time for your boat to plane out but your engine is still at 4000RPM, would more horse power really help you plane out?

More horsepower and a bigger prop(so less slippage) connected to it would help

right, more horsepower with the same prop wouldn't do anything, unless it enabled you to reach a higher RPM than you could with the old engine.

It is a different kind of torque, but still added torque, non the less. you can put alot of weight in a boat if it's distributed properly. i have a fat seat totally maxed so (1500-1600 lbs.) and 750 in the nose and it's perfect. Before i had 400 lbs. less int he nose and the wake was o.k. but the boat took 3 times as long to plane off. i would say 2:3 or allittle less. i don't want to add anymore cuz i like the transition i have now.
