PostPosted: Mar 17, 2004 6:21 am    Post subject: Why I hate St. Patrick's Day Reply with quote

I'll start this off by saying that I'm Irish on my Mother's side. McNamara. Scottish, too. Catholic blood.

I hate St. Patrick's day with a passion. Why? Here's why:

My, (the Irish) people have been persecuted ever since boats were invented that could get from England into Ireland. We have, since our written history, been under somebody else's boot, most recently Protestant England. We had to work OUR OWN LAND simply for the right to live in mud and thatch shacks "owned" by landlords in bed with the English, etc. etc. We were considered the least human of all Europe.

So then there's the potato famine. We come to America. (this is when my family came). We got treated like human waste, were denied the right to even apply for jobs, had to live in slums that would make today's projects look just lovely. We pulled together, fought in the civil war, pulled our votes together, became cops, politicians, laborors. We physically built a large portion of modern NY, along with the Italians. We fought in WWI, WWII, We didn't EARN respect from this country, we TOOK it by sheer will.

Under all this adversity, we kept our culture. We kept our identity. We remembered who we were, while assimilating and building this country at the same time. We are strong people who don't give up and who prize family, community, activism, culture, faith, and tenacity.

So of all our history, we pick one day a year and show the whole country that we are a bunch of green-beer-drinking, vomiting, fighting, public urinating, whisky swilling pigs.

No other nationality that I can think of not only fails to deny their negative stereotype, but embraces and proves it year after year. A celebration of our culture has become "everyone get drunk and act stupid day."

I hate St. Patrick's day, because I am Irish.

Except for green beer sounds like Fourth of July or Cinco de Mayo or even Thanksgiving in some houses Wink

Well if your going to go back that far, you may aswell start talking smack about the Roman Catholics, because they invaded England, destroyed all its culture and Pagan beliefs (though they aren't all gone, thankfully), plunging us into the dark ages. So our culture then evolved from the Romans (who treated the English like Sh*t), so blame them, and I'm sure you could go back even further to see who persecuted the Romans.

So what's you point, limey? That England was not the dominant imperial power in the world from the Enlightenment up until WWII? This post is about how the Irish should be proud and not act like a bunch of drunks today, not a weep-fest for poor England.

cameraboy, The Sun never set on the British Empire (Que Anthem) Laughing
Take it with a pinch of salt, I should of added the smiley face on the end.
Anyways my Grandmother is Irish. (If we are talking blood, I'm not very English.) I'm not saying a weep day for England (which I find a really weird thing for you to say) Its got nothing to do with one being better than the other, its about celebrating your country's saint.
Every saints day, is a day that is celebrated( Except for Saint George, no-one seems to care about that day, maybe its the morris dancers Laughing ). Each British country and european region has a saint, with a saints day, and each are celebrated, its natural, its a holiday.

Sorry about calling you a limey.

My point is just this: In the US, St. Patrick's day has just become a huge excuse for public drunkeness.

No worries about the "Limey" comment. The limes were there to stave off scurvy, means they were healthy. Smile

marcg, "Steamed"? Thats a new word for me meaning sloshed. Steamed usualy means mad or steaming is taking a piss. Or unless it was derived from being pissed past tense for steaming, so you get steamed. I see, just never heard it in that sense before. Must be an Irish-American thing.

Leggester, as usual, you missed my point. It's about stereotypes. The Irish PROOVE their stereotype every year.

It would be like if everyone went out and was snotty and surrendered en'masse' on Bastille day, and then half the country collaborated with Nazis.

or if everyone on Cinco De Mayo went around doing Speedy Gonzales impressions and put crowns in the back of their 1985 Cadilac El Dorados. Negative stereotypes. That's the point.

Actually, with the 5th of May, the low riders get stoked up and cruise Federal. Also proving their stereo types.

I don't really think that Micks have a stereo type. Not like Ghetto punks anyway.

Ever hear about the gay Irishmen? Patrick FitzGerald and Gerald FitzPatrick Mr. Green

( BTW, St Pattie's day is strictly for amateurs - much like New Years )

cameraboy, shut up and stop your whining. All holidays have lost their true intent.

Reguadless of how some people celebrate, most, likely follow this pattern:

Christmas: a time to spoil your kids w/ "presents" that they soon grow tired of
V-Day: a day to spoil your g/f or wife in hopes of getting deserved action
St. Patties Day: an excuse to go to the bars and get piss drunk
Easter: kids hunt for easter eggs that the bunny hid for them
May 5: another excuse to go to the bar and get piss drunk while wearing a sombrero and eating mexican food
Mardi Gras: go to walmart or a novelty store and buy beads to give to girls who show you their "special" parts
July 4: a day to celebrate your nation's independence by blowing a small piece of it up.......ie fireworks-----> a day to feel patriotic.....the rest of the year you can criticize how shitty the gov't is.
Labor Day/Memorial Day: an excuse to miss work and go to the bar and get obliterated
Halloween: a day for kids to get free candy and have a legitimate reason to dress up as spongebob.
Thanksgiving: a day to see extended family besides funerals and begin the winter weight.

.....see. All holidays have become commercialized and are celebrated in little to no relationship of their true origin or meaning. So I reiterate......STOP WHINING.

Kswiss, go f youself and don't read my posts if you don't like what I have to say. Like the true simpleton you have proven yourself to be, you missed my entire point, again.

My point is that St. Patrick's day is all about an ethic stereotype, a stereotype that the ethnicity in question chooses to perpetrate on this day. We don't have a day where everyone pretends to be jewish and acts cheap all day, or a day where everyone pretends to be black and raps and collects welfare all day, or a day where everyone pretends to be puerto rican and boxes and steals cars all day. Those are all negative stereotypes that other ethnicities attempt to put and end to, not perpetuate like my dumby wumby race does.

Go f myself b/c I feel that your opinion is irrational and an attack toward your culture? Well, ok. That may have simply been one of your worst posts ever due to the fact that you seem to be blind to both sides of this issue.

So if I don't like your post I should just not say anything. Therefore, what you were looking for by starting this thread was sympathy?! YOU of all people should know that you aren't going to get responses that agree with how you feel.

AND apparently YOU missed the point of MY post where I stated that all holidays now lack their original intent due to overcommercialization. IMO, you seem to be searching for someone to say that they are Irish and feel the same way as you. However, I feel I know your personality with the types of posts you have made and to which you have responded to.....which then leaves me confused.

Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling.
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come to me Danny, my Danny,
Say you love me if dead I well maybe.
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel on me and say "I love you so".
