Anyone else notice how you take medicine when you're sick, and you don't take it when you feel good? And when you do take medicine, it makes you feel worse and worse until you stop taking it and then feel better?
I think I'm onto something here... I mean, why else is medicine so expensive and pharmacists get paid so much... they have to cover up this grand scheme somehow... |

Is this like the dentist thing?
I don't really care abou their scheme though since I don't take medicine unless I'm dying. |

Where is Dragonlady to set the record straight? If you are talking about OTC meds then I agree that they mostly suck. But... a good portion of perscription drugs serve a very good purpose.
I guess it takes REALLY being sick to see it for yourselves. I know I have _________________

I think Chales is just drunk again or something.
Chales,
I liked the dentist consipacy theory better. This one is just lacking somehow.
Chavez,
On the serious note, I think OTC drugs are good too if you just use them right. I know I occasionally have a use for Ibuprofen and Sudafed and they work great. Under some circumstances Nyquil is the stuff. I think people just don't have realistic expectations for drugs in general. There's no such thing as a magic pill. _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

salmon_tacos, ibuprofen and excedrin work for me and so does nyquil. Sudafed alone just doesn't work for me...
I agree 100% that there is NO magic pill! _________________

chavez-y-chavez,
It's interesting that you mention that. What are you using the Sudafed for? I find that almost everyone thinks Sudafed is an antihistimine when it's really just a nasal decongestant. It will help with a stuffy nose but won't help with allergies, in general.
I use it if I have a stuffy nose or a sinus headache and it works great. It won't do crap for a runny or itchy nose, itchy eyes, itchy throat, etc. though. _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

salmon_tacos, I definitely don't use it for allergies - but I don't get them much. It doesn't really cut it for sinus headache for me... I gotta mix in some excedrin to make those go away. _________________

chavez-y-chavez,
Cool. I just noticed that common misconception recently.
Of course, now I have to rant about the "D" versions of all the non-sedating antihistimines (Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, etc.) These are the same as the non-D versions but with Sudafed mixed in.
The problem is that you have to take those antihistamines every day for them to be effective while the decongestants work very well on an as-needed basis. Additionally, over use of nasal decongestants is known to increase the risks of various sinus problems so why would you want to take them every day if you don't have to? Why combine these drugs?
Still, I know all these people who notice that Zyrtec-D makes them feel good faster, when their allergies hit, than regular Zyrtec so they think it's some kind of magic stuff. I tell them, "Why don't you just take Sudafed for the first couple of days until the antihistamines kick in and eliminate the underlying cause of your congestion?" They say, "What? I'm sure it's not the same thing!" Oh, well. Suckers. Watch them get rebound congestion, sinus infections, etc. when they go off the medication for the season.
Hmm...I'm starting to think that maybe Chales has a point. _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

I think the reason that a lot of OTC drugs don't work is because people use them for the wrong reasons. Not only that, everybody's allergies or cold is different. Sometimes a drug won't work as effectively because of a mutation.

Chales - I don't know what kind of medication you're speaking about, but it sounds like Bill Y Bob, salmon_tacos, pretty much hit it dead on.
If you're not taking it right or taking it for the wrong reasons it might not be as effective.
OR if you're taking medications that should not be combined together could be another resaon as well.
When it comes to allergies many people should be on Nasal Steroids combined with the oral meds. Nasal steroids will help with immediate relief until the oral medications get into the system.
Another thing that helps with allergies is using Ocean Nasal spray. Use it to wash out your nasal passages 1st before you use the Nasal steroid.
Sorry for getting off the beaten path. I gotta get to work. |

I just drink my sickness away. In all seriousness i have had times where after a hard night of drinking I woke up with my sore throat or cold gone. I dont know why that is. I dont think there is enough alcohol present to kill the virus or bacteria. And I dont think the boos help kick the immune system into a higher gear. Im clueless, but i sure do love it. _________________ jt09 wrote:

Dragonlady8, that Ocean spray works great, but I found an ever better spray. It's a saline and aloe mix from a company called Naturade. If you live in a dry climate the stuff is the stuff. _________________

| My allergies were kicking my arse a couple weeks ago, and I was recommended Triaminacin(sp?). It worked great for my sinuses, but it is definetly a sedative. It works better at knocking me out than pills that are designed to do so. |
