I play both bass and guitar.... been playing for over 20 years now...
I've got a custom built Fender strat and an Ibanez bass, along with various amps, effects and other toys...
in my opinion, I would never buy a guitar off the net, I'd always go into the shop and play all of them until you find one that "jumps out at you" I've played $170 mexican Fender Strats that had better sound and felt better in my hands than a $1500 american texas special strat, same with acousitcs, nearly every guitar you pick up will have it's own personality.
If you don't go this route, make sure whereever you buy has a good return policy.

support your local shop anytime you get the opportunity to. I just bought a new accoustic and this is how I did it. I went around to a bunch of shops in the area every other day or so for an hour, mostly my favorite one though, and played probably 75-100 guitars for a month or so until i finally decided on the one that I really wanted. I then went and did my research on the internet to find the lowest price. After that, I went back to my local shop and told them that I would buy their guitar if they would give it to me for the price I found on the internet + the shipping costs. They were very receptive to this idea and happy to have my business. And I was happy to have their guitar. Isn't that a beautiful story? _________________ Get Frugally Green!

| yeah man go to a store ive lucked out getting the bass's that i have off the internet. Ive had a lot of people tell me that they have gone to a store and found a guitar they liked and ordered it from an online store and it just wasnt the same. I have a mexican strat too and it plays better than a lot of higher end guitars. I got it because it played so good at the store. |

May i ask why fender? are you just partial to it? because i has a fender, and i thought it was ok, but then i got a Gibson Les Paul aand it blew me away. they are pretty pricey, but if you dont want to spend the money, Epiphone (same company) sells les pauls under thier name, for a lot cheaper, with almost the same spund. some people actually say they sound better. _________________ Religion. While I'd agree with the guys who say support your local shop, there's a rare occasion where I think it's okay to deviate from this pattern. Namely if your local shop is Guitar Center 'cuz 6 different guys will try to pressure you into buying their overpriced gear & it gets annoying real fast.
Tyler's plan works well too, most shops are more than willing to match internet prices since they're usually not too disparate. I've bought online a couple times 'cuz I wasn't able to find the instruments I wanted at any of the local shops. Yes, you run the risk of getting something that doesn't sound great, but usually they have a return policy that covers that 'cuz they know that's bound to happen. |

Even if your preferred shop doesn't have the guitar you want they will probably order it for you. Being left handed I'm familiar with this problem. I'm a firm believer in supporting local shops. Moreover, I like to find A shop that I use. That way you can build a relationship with them.

ben746, maybe you could be a little more specific? I don't know much about electric guitars, I'm sure there are others that don't either. Obviously they are different, but I would like to know some things about them that make them so much different. Although I do believe every electric guitar is different, I don't think they are different in the same way that accoustics are. Ive actually had both a strat and a les paul, still have the les paul...i thought they sounded quite a bit alike.....I guess they feel different...but not that much. Im rambling. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

Aside from body shape, most Les Pauls are made completely of mahogany wood. I'm sure you've noticed how heavy it is. Mahogany is also well known for its resonating quality, much better than the maple that is standard in Stratocasters.
The pickups are also different. I'm not too familiar with electronics in general & I'm particularly in the dark with guitar since I'm a bass player, but as far as I know Les Pauls come standard with dual humbucking pickups whereas Strats utilize the more standard pole piece pickups (I don't know the technical term for those). Hopefully a guitar player here will have much more to say than me.
The bridges are also different. Strats utilize the one way whammy bar bridge, Les Pauls have a fixed non-whammy bridge.
That's about all I can offer on this subject. Ask me about the bass, I'm better at that. |

| I couldnt tell you the difference youd have to play them. I find gibson necks to not be as fast as fender. Might have been the one i was playing but i didnt care for it. Gobson's are wayyy overpriced anyway. Gibson actually has a bigsby tail peice that works as a tremlo. |

You may have missed the part where I said I have owned both of them. (Though the strat was actually a Squire). Now that I think of it, I guess I would agree that the neck is a little faster than a les paul. I guess I don't really notice subtle differences in electrics because I really don't like them anymore. As far as I can see/hear...if you play 2 electric guitars through the same amp at the same settings, they will both sound the same...provided the pick ups are of equal quality. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

Guitars and pickups vary as much or more than wakeboards. Pickups on guitars are as fins are to wakeboards. BIG difference in sound. And as far as guitars go it is all a personal choice. Tone is also personal taste. I find most beginning guitarist like Gibson Les Paul style for their easy playability. And those who like and stay with that style usually move up to the PRS's(Paul Reed Smith). Myself, custom strat all the way. Love the scalloped maple neck. And all the talk about guitars and we haven't even talked amps yet...... |

If you don't want to spend a boat load of money, I've always been very happy with the Ibanez RG570. 24 frets, "thin" neck, easy to have set up with low action. SOunds very good in stock form, or easy to replace the pickups. # pickups with 5 way selector, get any tone you want, from Les Paul to Strat sounding. You can find them all day for $300 in good condition. If you want a "Strat" Look at G&L's Legacy guitar. It's actually more strat than strats are. Since they're made by Leo Fender, Hence the "L" in G&L. SStrats have become junk in most cases, unless you find a vintage one, and spen a few grand on it. Also, go to a guitar shop and check out the G&L Tribute. It's made in Korea, but has the SAME electronics and the American made ones, and they sound fine. Also, look at ESP Lespaul guitars. FOr under $500 you can get a new one. Plug it in, and it's close enough to a REAL Paul in tone, that you won't notice the $1000 you saved. There are SO many choices. It all depends on what you want to spend. But these are my recomendations for under $500.
Good luck, Darin
