yup,

tantrum = backflip
backroll = no hands cartwheel

a hs backroll is easiest, and needs a progressive edge.
a hs tantrum is next easiest, and needs a trip edge (or somthing like that).

easy is relative, I can do neither Razz

HS tantrum looks like a trampoline backflip.
A TS backroll also looks like a trampoline backflip.
An HS backroll looks kind of like a cartwheel, but at the same time not. Here's a video of an HS backroll and it's variant, the mexican roll: http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=6582

danbrentt - whichever rotation you think would be easier for you would be the easiest trick for you. I learned a tantrum WAY before i learned a backroll...its just all in what you're comfortable with. I guess I understood the tantrum better than the backroll (body positioning and edging) and it just came more naturally. Have a go at both of them and decide which you felt more comfortable doing...good luck!

peace

A backroll is also sort of like a sideways gainer. A gainer is a flip you can do off a tramp or a diving board where you jump forward and do a backflip.

Many people think the backroll is easier because it uses the same progressive edge used on regular wake to wake jumps. The trantrum actually has an easier rotation, it's jsut you have to use a trick flip edge to start the rotation.

a tantrum is a flip, not a roll. It's like doing a layout in gymnastics.

Technically, a tantrum is easier because you don't really have to think about much, whereas a backroll is a bit more technical. BUT, in my progression, I found it easier to start with the backroll mostly because I was scared about turning my back to the wake and you come in with more speed, so it's scarier. If you try either one, the other will come easily because you're already used to going upside down. Just my 2cents.

BLiNDSiDER, go to the video section of this site: http://www.wakeboard.com.sg . It has clips of just about every trick there is. I find it's a lot easier to learn the names of tricks by seeing them than by hearing a definition. Also check the longer video Got Wake (at the same site). It shows all kinds of tricks starting with the most basic going to more advanced ones, with subtitled trick names.
