It's now offseason (for me at least, i live in maine) and i was wondering if you guys could give me some tips for working out. I'm not quite old enought to get a membership at a nice gym so anything else will do. Very Happy

um..do you want actual like workouts or just general off season training..for some just general off season training. obviously weightlifting, gymnastics, snowboarding, trampoline, anything with balance or hand-eye coordination, and as last resorts watchin videos and visualizing or even playing wakeboarding unleashed if you get the oppurtunity
As for actual stretches or work outs i cant really help you out.

If you can't get to the gym just buy yourself some weights, and excersize ball...I got to the gym and other than cardio and machines using the ball comprises quite a bit of my workout mainly due to the versatility. You can even balance on it on your knees, and once you get good, try and catch a ball while balancing. Like wakeboarder_124 said anything to do you balance and boardsports is a plus, and once you can get a membership go for it, it is totally worth it and sooo much fun! Oh, and one more thing: try buying some workout vids for cardio, pilates, anything that will help with strength stamina and flexibility.

Don't know for sure that pilates helps wakeboarding since I still suck but definitely recommend it in general and it makes sense that flexibility is important. I started doing it almost a year ago and I'm TONS more flexible than I was. Do you guys think flexibility comes in more to prevent injuries than helping performance? I know guys who can barely touch their knees but kill wakeboarding. Recommend yoga too. I'm also throwing weightlifting into my workouts now to help me next year...that I wanna have Terminator2 chick arms Smile

You can get a beginning yoga tape. That's what I use. I also run, skateboard, bicycle, heck anything I can to stay active. I'm also 35 though.

Yeah I have a yoga DVD by Rodney Yee that is really good. I do that when I wanna a good stretch or want to zin out and calm down. There's not much cardio to the ones that I do so wouldn't expect a hard sweat fest type workout but feels really good. I like to do it and pilates especially when my back is sore...helps out alot.

don't forget the indo board!!!! plus, push ups and upper body work outs will help keep your upper body in shape, so you're not too far behind when season starts back up. Plus, if you can run, that'll help keep up your stamina when you start riding again.

Hey, I heard about this nice idea about adding weight to your handle and doing passes with it.. sounds like it would work good to practice for 3's Very Happy I also lift a lot of weights, but be careful not to get so intensive you injure yourself.. last year I messed up my shoulder cuz i was benching too much and its still bothering me Sad

adding a weight and simple pulley system to a handle is a GREAT way to pracitice spins! I need to set one up in my yard. TWC has one set up in the back and it's almost exactly like trying it behind the boat.

I got to thinking about this at the gym the other day too...saw the rowing machines. I wonder if that would work some of the same muscles with the pulling of the rope and the pushing with your legs. Can't be too far off if they're not the exact same muscles but couldn't hurt anything anyway.

soulslider, whereabouts in Maine are you from!?!? I'm from Maine too, Cumberland, jus outside of Portland. In the winter I pick up the wakeskate an surfboard, snowboard occasionally, but its a little too expensive for me. You kiteboard!!?!? I've always wanted to try that! Thats so awesome! You can kiteboard all thru the winter too, both on the snow an water, believe it or not. I surf all the way thru the winter (I suck at it but its still fun) with a 6mm wetsuit. If you live close to Portland an you wanna try out surfing before Jan 12 04 (I head down to FL for school) let me know cause my local shop (Ride 207) lends me surf boards for free an I may be able to get you a wetsuite to borrow as well an I can teach you the surf basics, if you like it you can buy the gear. It would be a one day thing, like I couldn't let you take the board/suite but I could meet you at Higgins beach or Scarborough beach an you could give it a shot. I haven't surfed for a while but a friend of mine and I have been meaning to go out, so if your up for it we could go out the three of us, an if you wanna go early (6am ish) then the guys from the shop will come too, they're great instructors, they got me all set up an taught me everything I know. This time of year is great to learn tho cause there aren't many people out so you don't have to worry about being in anyone's way or anything. Plus do'n all the boardsports you do the actually surfing part will prolly be somewhat easy for you, its the learning how to paddle, duck dive, gett'n out and all that good stuff that can be really hard, but with time you'll get the gist of it.

Or if you want to wait for it to warm up I come back from FL the week of March 5th (but my schedule is already getting full for that week, but I could prolly work something out) then I am home for good May 7th.

~Bess

PS what shop do you go to? jus curious, cause if you frequent Sun Sports + or Ride 207 I may have seen you arround
