|
|
Hi All,
I have a Ryan tandem axle trailer and am considering changing out the 14" wheels/tires it came with to something larger like 17" or 18" to up the "bling-bling" factor.
Has anybody installed 17" or larger wheels/tires on their boat trailer?
Would you do it again?
Any pictures? |

a. it will beat the crap out of your boat.
b. your trailer brakes and bearings will be overloaded.
c. if you have fender wells, i doubt they will fit without rubbing on something.
d. tires with the proper load capacity aren't made with a lower aspect ratio that i
know of. |

Hey ya'll, I see you live in Beaverton too. Checked your profile, nice 'Bu. Must of just gotten it, because I haven't seen a all black 'Bu on the Willamette.
Well on to the topic. 16 or 17 no problem. Make sure of the right offset. The price is the same for either size. Check Les Schab. As far as brake or bearings, there is NO problem. And load capacity, your 'Bu weighs what....3000# or so. What do most cars weigh 3000# or so. Besides your not driving that far to the river. |

Think I'd have to go with tryan on this one. Any time you lower the aspect ration of the tires you're running (i.e. sidewall height), ride is gonna suffer. Remember that the sidewalls of your tires are part of the suspension system on your trailer and absorb a big part of the road irregularities your trailer has to deal with. Trailer tires are spec'd with an aspect ratio of 70 or so for a reason. Without the additional susspension you get through the sidewalls of your trailer tires, you'll put a lot more stress, through your bunks, into the hull of your boat. And I think we'd all agree, that aint a good think.

Phaeton is running 16 on his trailer now with out problems. I'm looking to go either 16 or 17 on mine. We both run 20s and 22s on our tow rigs without problems either. And sjmurray, is driving only a short distance to the river. Sure there is something to be said of sidewall, but not enough to be concerned about. Besides it is ALL about the BLING baby. |

Eric Golsan, I am running 15" wheels.
A couple more issues to consider.
Because of the lack of side wall the trailer will ride much rougher.
There will be less room for error with curbs and pot holes.
Load rating will not be an issue. If you don't tow very far then go for it. Otherwise I would stay with a 15" wheel tire combo. _________________ Travis Farber |
