LISTEN GUYS, I AM FROM A COLLEGE IN FLORIDA AND CURRENTLY WE HAVE A WAKEBOARD AND WATERSKI CLUB. THE SGA CUT OUR FUNDING FOR OUR BOAT AND I AM LOOKING TO DO A POLL TO CONVINCE THEM TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS.
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK EVERYONE IF HAVING A GREAT WATERSKI AND WAKEBOARD CLUB PROGRAM WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHEN SELECTING A COLLEGE TO ATTEND. i.e. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE BETWEEN A FLORIDA SCHOOL WITH A WATERSKI AND WAKEBOARD CLUB OR ONE WITHOUT, HOW IMPORTANT WOULD TO GO TO THE ONE WITH IT?
THANKS GUYS! KEEP RIDING!

Not to worry about the quality of education at all.
If it does make that much difference to you, Kansas has a few colleges with water ski teams.

Dude I'm having to make a decisions on college now, and if there isn't a place where i can wakeboard It is put to the bottom of the pile, so if i can ride wth a club, It would definatly be a big plus. I think it would be really cool to have a club in the school.

| I would rather go to a school if it had a wakeboard/ski team. But quality of education would be higher on my list than a wakeboard team. Although dont get me wrong, I would probably put as many hours into a wakeboard team as I would with my schoolwork.

I go to FSU and I am on the Wakeboard/waterski team. What happened to your funding? How was it cut? Was it promised to you? Were there some circumstances that you need to do to keep the funding? How many people do you have in your club? Are you at PJC or UWF? Is your club directly funded, or do you go through a sports club council?
Answer these things and I might be able to help you.
FSU is on a sports club system. Thwy give 75,000 to 35 clubs, and let them divide it between themselves. It is all merit based.... whoever does the most gets the most money.
I will be happy to answer any of your questions.

I don't know how it works in your school, but at my school SGA is the student government, which means that the school or admissions can't do anything about who SGA decides to give money to or not. You'll need to convince SGA to give that club your money back by going to meetings or talking to your SGA reps. Sounds like you just got a bunch of wally's in SGA.

At my school i think we just are on promo from malibu. A new boat every year as long as we can sell it. Being in FL do you think you can get on that?

Hey guys thanks for responding so quick. What I hope to achieve by doing this is to collect some actual polls to present to the SGA at my appeal hearing this Friday, Feb. 21.
In response to your posts:
Of course academics, quality of education, and so fourth are a primary considerations of most college students, but I also realize that for a lot of us out there, lifestyle and environment are also huge factors. That is where wakeboarding comes into play. I know I wouldn't have chosen a school without a waterski/wakeboard club of some sort-wakeboarding is a huge part of my life.
Our school is the University of West Flordia (UWF). For 20 years we have had this waterski club program and every year money is alloted from SGA Students Activities Fund to upgrade our boat to the next years model because of such excessive use. It is always rather difficult convincing SGA to give us this money because it is comparably larger than other club requests, but because we take out at least 200 students on campus (20 actual dues paying members) they fund us.
We do have deals worked with Ski Boat Solutions in Ocala, FL and he has deals with Malibu-that is another way we can swing this.
I know this is a rather detailed post, but I do appreciate honest polls. As I mentioned, I'd like to print this out for the SGA to take a look at.

| Why do you need a new boat every year. Our boat is out on the water almost every day, and we have a 98 nautique.

| If I was having a hard time deciding between two colleges and both the schools were good education wise and one had a wakeboard club I would definitly chose that one over the one without one. I wouldn't go to a school just because it had a wakeboard club though and sucked education wise.

To answer one of your questions:
We use our boat so frequently that it would not make sense to keep it any longer than a year. I just got done makeing all sorta of charts and graphs to prove this. Here's the deal: You get a new $40K boat for $10K + a trade-in, after a year of "UNIVERSITY USE" and with 350 hrs we trade it in and go through the process again. If we kept the boat, let's figure on 5 years. With a depreciation rate of $9K (dealer quote) because of excessive use, by about the 4 year mark the boat would be worth $0. Factoring in university use with 350/hrs a year for 5 years, I am not sure I know many people who would pay the change in their pocket for the boat. So since we're essentially left with a junker and 5 yrs down the road we gotta fork out about $45K for a brand new one all in one shot. I say $45K cause the same boat would have at least rose in price $5K in 5 years. I attached one of the many graphs I have made to show this.

If you spend $45,000 every 5 years that's only 9 thousand a year, less than $10,000. Also if you look at the Nadaguides, a five year old X-star has a low retail of $18,150 and an average of $23,270, quite far from the $0 your giving it.
Finally, I don't see why a college organization should have a $45,000 boat. At the best you guys should have a $20,000 inboard, and you really should have an older used inboard. While I think you guys have had a good thing going and it would be sweet to ride off a top of the line boat, I think your club/organization is irresponsible and selfish for demanding a brand new top of the line boat every year! There are many other clubs/organization that need money too, you guys are sucking out a huge unnessary chunk of SGA's funding. It would be different if that $10,000 was required for your club/organization to exist, but it is a luxory, why don't you guys make your request more reasonable...
Man, when I was in school it was about getting as much as you can for as cheap as you can, our clubs/organization tried to minimize the funding they needed from SGA and make due, they had pride.
Sorry,
Nick

Sean, the boats stay at a school owned boat house on the YMCA's property. You have to have a key to get in. Im pretty sure thats the deal we have. I remember that alot of the manufactures did it to regular people a while back almost like a sponsership. But talk to your local dealer of what ever kind of boat you want, and see what they have to say. I heard it was harder to get them than before, but if since it is a large school i think they would hook you up. You give their name and what ever dealer alot of publicity. The only catch is that is has taken to a tourment or two to be used or shown which i would think could be worked into the teams scheadul of competitions.
Im not 100% sure thats exactly what we have, but i do know that they still do promo deals that run this way.

In australia very little schools(secondary/primary) hav a water ski/ wakeboard program to offer... Some of the unis do, but it is a very limited sport in most areas of australia... There are clubs around just not in school I would definitly change schools if there was one in my area with a water ski/wakeboard club...
Peace

Hey im currently looking at colleges and I do think that quality of life there is almost as important as the education. Can anyone suggest any schools with good computer science programs (and wakeboard clubs)? Im currently looking at Full Sail which is one of the top colleges in the world for video game design AND its about 15 minutes outside Orlando, but the downside is its only a 2 year college and im looking for a 4.

after 5 years of using a boat 350 hours a year, it would have more than 1500 hours on it, that would be some mad hours and it wouldn't be much unless you did a complete overhaul,
and by the way, what part of pensacola are u in, my parents grew up in pace, and all my relatives still live there, including one who goes to UWF, they live like 10 minutes from there do ya'll ride on the escambia,

I would definatetly choose a school with a wakeboard club over a schol without one. I was considering getting rid of my first choice school bcause i thought they didn't have one... but as it turns out, they do, so I'm set on going there!

1500 hours is like 45,000-60,000 miles on a car, shouldn't be a big deal. We put well over 350 hours on our boat a year, more like 500-600. It's a '91 that we got in 2001, don't know how many hours were on it before we got it.

yea that whole 1500 hours=45,000-60,000 miles is junk, maybe as far as thats how much time the engine has run, but marine engines take alot more abuse than normal engines

I go to Alabama and this is how it is here.
We have a ski team that gets a new boat each year and doesn't really associate with wakeboarding. I was gonna start a wakeboard club here but after some research decided against it. One big prob. here is funding. Im the president of another club and we are the best club team in the nation and can only get $2,000 a year. The ski team gets all their donations from alumni since they have been around 20 years. Therefore, the faculty and SGA see no reason for floating a new wakeboard club any money towards a boat plus having a nationally recognized football powerhouse eats up much funding. My question is how do you START a wakeboard club without a wakeboarding boat?
later,
Jim Bob

I have a couple of questions?
Gulfcoastrider,
First off, our boat is a 98, and we put at least 300 hours a year on it. Why would you say that our boat would be worth nothing? We just had our boat quoted by a nautique dealership, and they said that they would give us a little over 10grand for it. Somehow the numbers don't work out.
Also, earlier you said that education is a big part of where you choose your college, along with lifestyle. Is it just me or am I wrong by thinking that UWF is a school that people go to because they can't get into anywhere else. It has the lowest requirements in the state for a 4 year university. It is a pretty big school, but they always have problems getting enough people to enroll. I know this because my mom taught there in the past. I just want to know why you chose UWF? Was it lifestyle or grades?

i dont realy know why u are so worried about selling your boat at the end off each year 300 hours isnt that many for a big uni. our personal boat does just under 200 hours per year thats with 2 regular wakeboarders and over 2000 pounds in it stop your winging and at least keep the boat for 2 years.
im from Australia and our smaller uni's. would do at least 600 hundred hours per year most get a new malibu every year but i know off a couple that do have 2-3 year old ones not a thing wrong with them
