| How come when its summer and usually 80, I can walk around in shorts, but when it turns 60 out I freeze and need to wear a coat and jeans, but in the winter when its usually 0 out and then it turns 40 all of a sudden I can walk around in shorts and feel just fine?

| you're body adapts to the temperature(acclimatization) so after it gets used to it being hot at 80, 60 feels cold. after it gets used to 0, 40 feels hot.

I always wear shorts when its 40. And a sweatshirt when it's 0. I only consider a jacket when it's -10.
Chales, sorry, I can't be anymore specific because I dont take bio, and that's all I learned about it last year in general science.

bluefish is right, your body acclimates to its surroundings.
your body doesn't produce as much heat and sheds fat when it is warm, so when the temp drops you feel it.
Now that its cold you put on a few pounds, your body works harder to keep you warm, so when it actually does warm up, even at 40 degrees, it feels warmer to you.

It also has to do with perception. If it looks warm (eg: the sun is out), then you can get away with wearing less. For example, Last winter I went up the mountain, and although the sun was out, the wind chill was BAD, but I was still happy to cruise around in a short sleve t-shirt, cause it looked like a nice day!
Maybe I'm stupid...

| Oh yeah, I also forgot: your skin detects change in temperature, not just temperature. So, if your going outside from a sauna, it will feel cooler than if you just go outside from your house.

| Nope, still haven't seen the right answer. It has noting to do with perception or getting fat. Well, it might, but not as much as the real reason.

| I'd have to go with acclimatization to the cold weather from just being outside a lot. Maybe your skin feels less stress than normal to the 40 degree weather when it is used to being exposed to the 0 degree weather.

| the lipids in your plasma membrane of your cells move further apart when it is colder out to increase surface therefore increasing the body's resistance to cold, so when it is like from 0 then to 40, you have all those cells acting as a coat. visa versa when it is warm to cold. the lipids constrict together. it may also have to do with you carcadian rythem

Humidity. I could explain why now, but it's bedtime and I need something to do at work tomorrow....

i don't think the plasma membrane is made of a lipid--not too sure what it is made of but i believe lipids are macromolecules and are too big too be in the membrane
---could the answer possibly be that when u get cold ur skin constricts as the molecules pull together and as u go to where it is 40 degrees ur skin is constricted around u helping to maintain ur body heat giving the false sense that it is warm???

I'm real curious now, but I think your wrong. First thing is that even though it may be 0 out, you still spend the majority of time in your heated house/car at 70, so I doubt there is time to "acclimate." Humidity does play a large role in how hot/cold you are, 100 F with 100% humidity is way different than 100 F with 25% humidity.

| Although you spend most of your time inside, it isn't always 70. My room is 60 in the winter and 80 in the summer, so that combined with the even more extreme temps outside would give time for acclimation. As for hummidity and wind chill, acclimation probably is affected by the "feels like" temperature and not the actual temperature.

[quote="Josh Hrdy"]i don't think the plasma membrane is made of a lipid--not too sure what it is made of but i believe lipids are macromolecules and are too big too be in the membrane"
The plasma membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, with proteins (macromolecules) imbedded in it. The polar heads are pushed together by the non polar tails making a bilayer.

something like that, and when it gets cold they move further apart to increase surface area. That above is what the outside of every one of your cells looks like

hmm...I have never heard of this "lipid polarization," can you point out a valid reference? While I haven't heard of that, I do know a lot about heat transfer. Basically what matters to a person is heat transfer more than temperature. A person produces from 75-750 watts, which must leave the body or you will fry. Heat tranfer rate is equal to the temperature differance times the surface area times a heat transfer coeff. The temperature difference is obviously fixed, and it appears some of you guys claim the surface area is changed, but i don't see how it is significantly changed. The only thing the body can really control is the heat transfer coeff. This is manipulated by the body using sweat, etc.. . .
Here's an example:
In the summer time I keep my house at 68 and feel generally warm. This is because the humidity is rather high and it is more difficult for moisture to evaporate off people's bodies and take away heat because of the high humidity. In the winter time I keep my house at 72 and feel generally cold. This is because the low humidity causes easy evaportation and more heat loss. As the temperature drops farther, things change. Humid air will suck the heat out of things better than non-humid air. A way to think about it is this, what could you stay in longer, 32 water or 32 air? The result is because water sucks the heat out of you easier, humid air does as well. Also, the acclimation argument still doesn't hold, because despite the temperature, you still wear more when it's colder....as in I bet you wear less in the summer when it's 80 and wear more in the winter when it is 60. By wearing more clothes you change the heat transfer coeff., like I said, I don't see how you can sig. change the temperature differance or the surface area.

Oh, its coming back to me now, wow I feel dumb. You're right Otis. I got this whole topic mixed up with how red blood cells count goes up when you climb mountains (and why boxers used to train in the mountains), to increase the amount of oxygen you take in. I have no idea how I got the 2 confused. Oh well. And that's why I said kyle was close, because he was kinda talking about blood.
And this is the best thread. Ever.
