whats up brian.....we went out on my lake (bout 30 min south of wiley) and the water temp was in the mid 40s to about 50. I don't know how far up blews lake is but i figured that may give you something to gage it by.

According to mapquest, Hyco is 107 Miles from Roanoke. So it's got to be about as close as Blews Lake. I'd suggest geting a hold of Bill(hlboatsnboards) From Hcyo Boats N' Boards. He owns the Calabria shop on the lake and will show you all the "Hot" spots. Last I knew though the Coal plant that keeps the lake heated was being repaired or something. That was a month or so ago, so it might be fixed now. Anyway like I said talk to Bill if your going to go or want more info.

bill- i posted on endofropegang.com about coming down there for a weekend also. is it true the plants shut down? that would kinda defeat the purpose of travelling to ride on a heated lake

Well not exactly....here is the deal. Even after trying to stuff the pockets of the workers, they are not pumping nearly as much warm water this year. Not sure of the reason, but right now they are not recycling out of the lake. They are pulling from the DanRiver right now so it doesn't come out of the plant nearly as warm. If that isn't bad enough, there main generator aka...LAKE WARMER, is down for repairs. They still have 3 running which are considerably smaller, but only keeps the lake around 55 +/- 3 degrees. I rode VERY comfortably in a dry suit about 2 weeks ago. In a full suit, with an extra heater shirt, its still somewhat bearable....but not desired.

Granted we are still a lot warmer then other lakes around....Hyco still frequents many boarders on the pleasant weekends.

B

Hyco should be fine in full suits. My crew & I rode on Jan 1 and Feb 1, in just full suits and were fine. As Bill stated, water temps were 53-56. Granted it has been colder than normal lately, but there was still some snow on the ground on 2/1 when we rode. I am 2 hours away to the southeast, and it is definitely worth the drive for us to get our winter fix. I forgot about Belews Creek, never been but heard it was nice.
