4x4 diesel trucks

Looking at both Chevy/GM 2500 4x4 w/ Duramax and 6 speed manual & Dodge 2500 4x4 w/ Cummins HO and 6 speed manual. Both w/ 3:73 rear end.

Anyone have experience/advice?

are these both 04'. I have heard some good things about the new Duramax engine!

I say Dodge but I'm biased. If you put the cummins up against the duramax or the PS it will win hands down in every category. Now the Dodge vs. Ford vs. Chevy is just preference. I personally like Chevy's Body the best and Ford's King Ranch interior.

To back up my argument here is a picture of the connecting rods from the 3 diesels. Cummins is on the right, Ford is in the middle.

Dpierce37, looking at '02s to brand new. Probably have to special order '04 to get options/package I want.

Swass, never owned anything but Chevy/GM trucks and have never been disappointed. Not too fond of the any dealers I've been to so far, total pricks. You know the kind telling you what you want/need (off their lot)?

Grandfather has '00 Dodge 2500 w/ big V8 added 1 ton springs to rear. Tows great, good truck, but horrible mileage and WAY too stiff of ride w/out trailer on it.

wes reeves, Wow...PS and Duramax are v8s right? Cummins is straight 6? Probably has something to do with size differential.

Why manual? With the newer automatics today, I see no advantage, unless your gonna pull 12k+lbs. You might also look at the Ford Powerstroke. Ive got 217,000 miles on my '96 and its been a good one. Ive done about 10x pulls on both camper&boat.

Never have cared for auto tranny(or Fords), I like to decide what gear I'm in. There maybe less advantage to manual than in the past BUT it's still my $$$ so I should get what I want.

My '95 Chevy 1500 v8 w/ 5 speed has 220k miles, didn't even replace original clutch till 175k. So they provide pretty damn good service as well.

i have a new 4x4 duramax w/ the allison auto tranny. it is a duallie so i only get 13 mpg, but that is mainly b/c it has 225's on it. my neighbor gets much better milage with 265's, but i bought mine strictly as a work truck. it is a flatbed =)

Yea Streeter I know what your mean on the Ford thing, Ive been a Chevy man all the way and my family died when I brought home the F250 and sold my Chevy. I bought F250 used cause a friend had to sell it thing. I bought the wife an new Impala to make up for it. I test drove the Chevy truck and I really like the the power extend mirrors, too cool! Although Im not sure on the Isuzu diesel yet. Good Luck.

i have owned 6 powerstrokes and i will have to say that the '96 like h2obugs was the best pulling machine i have ever driven. the newer ps are lacking in the bottom end department. the 96 would pull from idle like it was nothing and my 99 sucked and the 01 is even worse.

i have towed with an allison behind an 8.1. sweet.

a dodge has the best turning radius.

i want a ford truck with an allison tranny behind a cummins diesel. anybody have a sawzall? Shocked

I'm just messin' around. I'm a Ford guy, but everyone has their preferences.

I love my truck (F250 PSD), but I have to say, I'm getting a bit worried about the maintenance issues I've had so far. It has roughly 29K on it, and so far, it's had the following items replaced under warranty:

Front main engine seal
Alternator
O-rings on high pressure oil pump (just got it back today for this one)

With that said, I know three people who have over 100K on their PSDs, and they've never leaked so much as a drop. The same can be said for my old Ranger, which had 140K on it when I sold it.

Swass , the connecting rod pic is pretty cool. The longer rod on the straight 6 Dodge should translate into better low rpm torque at the flywheel.

With Chevy being the shorter of the v8s that should mean it's powerband is at a higher rpm range than the 'stroker' version Ford has, putting it at some disadvantage to the Ford torque-wise at low rpm at the flywheel.

fords really s.u.c.k. that's why i keep on buying them. i'll go back to a 96 before i would get a 6.0. horsepower yes. bottom end torque. nadda.

those ford rods in the picture are powdered metal junk.

the clutch master and slave cylinder are made of plastic. (the first blew at 30k the second at 45k) i did not get stranded, but it pisses me off.

i just developed an oil leak. could be the high pressure pump like swass or the o-rings on the turbo mount., valve covers and/or intake snorkles leaking from the 2 quarts of oil in the intake tract. that's next on the list. diesels have a 100k warranty with a 100 dollar deductable. i don't drive things that leak oil. bad juju.

diesels can be designed run quietly, but american engineers haven't figured that out yet. listen to any german diesel that injects the fuel into a chamber built into the top of the piston.

comfort is all relative. chevys leather is soft, plush and cracking or torn at the seams in a couple years. i just drop the tire pressure to 45 when i'm not towing or loaded. ( not me. the truck) towing is a much smoother ride.

not much difference between 14 and 16 mpg they all are terrible. when people say they get 20 mpg they are either bad at long division, trust the trip computer, never drive over 50 or wax their truck with some frontal area stealth wax.

i keep two nylon tow straps in the bed. ones marked dodge and the others marked chevy. Cool

I'd go with the Cummins. Those things run and run and run. My friend is a PS mechanic, and a set of injectors for that thing are $4grand! Shocked

Better buy that ext. warranty if you buy Ford!

i own a 03 dodge 2500 diesel 4x4. it gets around 20 mpg on the highway unloaded with 35" tires. it got around 16 with stock tires. and can tow anything you can hook to it Smile

....i wouldn't have another truck. ford is too noisy and stiff as a log wagon, chevy is a glorified car you have to keep floored because of the stupid ass transmission in it.

I'm not to sure about that either.....did you put a chip or Banks system on your Dodge? I def know my truck with 35's did not get anywhere near 20mpg

Here's my new baby.....I can def tell you that I don't have to keep it floored. 590ft/lbs of toque is plenty.

The only thing I hate about the Chevy's is their insistance on putting weinie-a$$ street tires on their 4x4 trucks. I know they're trying to save some coin but geez....those things are pathetic and make my truck useless on slick boat ramps.

i say get a dodge if you wanna get rattled to death! My 2000 psd will pull my boat at an idle. I love it. I've used the chevy's and they are nice, but they were out of my price range. I'll keep mypsd and Probably never get anything else.
