How hard is salt water on the boat? Engine without closed water cooling, wakeboards, gelcoat, etc. Do any of you leave your boat in salt water?

We leave the boat in the salt water for 2 months, but it's older.
The wakeboards are rinsed off after each ride and they are fine

I'm thinking about pulling my boat to Florida. I would probably leave it in the water for about a week.

I kept mine in the salt water for two entire summers in NY. I have a 1997 MC 205. Inboard tow boats are not really made for salt water in my opinion, they are too pretty. Naturally the salt water corrodes metal much faster, including exhaust manifolds. I had problems with the seat mecanisms too. Of course there are barnacles so you have to paint the boat bottom if you leave it in. IMO, it significantly brings down the value and life expectancy all around. Everything just corrodes and falls apart faster. Plus all that salt on the boat from the sea spray stinks.

my friend benedict's boat breakes down all the time, pretty much the only place we ride is in the salt water and he always has engine and starter problems, you have to have a flush kit and if you dont remember to flush the engine after each and every time riding then the engine gets messed up

Thanks for the replies. If (big word) I only left in in a week, and got it flushed and cleaned. Would I see any problems, later on?

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BOAT IN SALT WATER FOR A WEEK if you even leave the boat in salt for 2 days ur pushing it. i know a guy that left his boat in salt for 3 days and he had barincles coming out of this ass. don't leave it in for a week. U WILL GET A stuff LOAD OF BARNICLES. we ride in salt only. as long as u flush it after every use and DON"T leave it in the water you'll be fine. as for the gear we just rinse everything down after and it stays fine.

Trust me on this. i've been around salt all my days dealing with water and it will destroy your boat if u leave it in there for a week. if u did, u would be scraping, not scrubing, scraping baricles for a very very long time!!!!!!!!

hey opie, i leave my boat in salt water for about 2 months at a time i dont have an inboard but as long as you flush the engin every once and a while your good to go, about the barnicals though, make sure you use the boat and keep it moving the longer it sitts the more barnicals, but you should have almost no barnical growth after only a week as long as you wakeboarding a couple hours a day.After about 3 weeks is when i get barnical gowth on my boat but deffinatly not after one week As for gear wash it off at the end of every day and your gear will be fine have a sick trip though and dont let the salt water bother you

Jeff ur right about that probably. if the boat sits i know you'll definately get barnicles, but if it moving it would slow it down a bit.

i dont ride in salt water, but i know salt water is the hardeset thing on ur boat ever, make sure you use viniger and water on it EVERYTIME you take it out, and make sure u wash it up good.

SALT WATER IS HARD ON YOUR STUFF!!!! Espescially the trailer. There is no way to get the salt off a painted trailer, and in a year or so , you will see rust. Guaranteed! If you are going to use it in salt, try to find a lake to dunk in after use. Also, the salt spray sticks to everything. I speak from Experience.

i second what mitchell said. if you dont have a galvanized trailer there is a 99% that it's gonna wreck your trailer.

You really should have no problems putting your boat in the salt water for only one week. There are millions of boats that spend their entire life in salt water. Some of the people on here, IMO, are over emphasizing the effects of salt water. Wash it off, and flush it and you will be fine. No big deal.

I agree with Partyb. We pretty much only ride in salt water and as long as you spend a little time cleaning after use its not gonna do too much.

I've found that trailer springs are the worst hit by salt water but even these aren't too bad if washed after.

The moral of the story is wash everything and you'll be fine.

Thanks again for all the info. The marina we looked at has a fork lift to take my boat off the trailer and put it/out in the water. They also offer a fresh water engine flush and hull rinse. For a slight fee of course. Can't wait to get wet. Very Happy

I ate toadstools once when I was four and my mum made me drink a cup of salt water. I spewed so quick it wasnt funny. I have never swam in the beach since!

Salt water will eventually ruin your boat. The only thing I like about salt water is the improved landings. You float more so landing big moves is easier. We ride in the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island Texas.
