wear it around town, school, shower etc.
wakeboarding never, except sliders.
i mean come ON, are you serious. unless you have some strange disease where your head is 3/4 softer then an over ripe watermelon, you really dont need to (shouldnt) wear one while wake riding, except the whole coolness thing

A couple buddies of mine went out to a dollar store and bought some cheap army helmets. They proceeded to rear-end a bus, and when the cops came they left the army helmets on and said they're "brakes failed."

Yeah chubby. Happened a few weeks ago. The driver has to go to court soon. When the cop was interviewing him he'd tilt the helmet down when he wasn't talking, then flip it back up when he was. Friggin' idiots...
Oh, and that should be "their" in my original post, not "they're"...

well, if your going to wear a helmet while doing wake to wake tricks, i guess you might as well wear it when you drive, take a shower, get the mail, go swimming, shopping, etc, because you are more likely to hit your head on something denser than water while doing those than wakeboarding. you always hear about the 22mph "rule" in wakeboarding, when critics say it dosent hurt, say your going 22mph. it gets pretty old because frankly wakeboarding does not hurt as much as most boarding sports. besides blowing out your knees etc, wakeboarding is relatively safe espicially if your worrying about a head injury. the only way you could really validate wearing a helmet while wakebaording (w2w still) is to prevent popping your eardrum on a particularly nasty fall, which sucks really bad.

and for #1., now you have heard of it, feel free to use that excuse anytime, enjoi

| Helmet will just increase the drag on your head so when you fall you have a better chance of Straining your neck. Water is soft, only wear one when jibbing.

well I use a mach III on my head every other day, and the helmet keeps my noggin warm in the winter. In the summer, it keeps me from burning..

true wakeboard helmets (read: not adaptations of bike or baseball helmets) are designed not to do this.
yeah, but trees and shizzle are hard.

I'm not going big enough yet to where this even applies to me...just throwing out what I've noticed. Anyway just from friends and observations from folks on here and other forums is that you hear more about people busting ear drums than anyone hurting their necks from wearing helmets. Anyone else get that general impression? I've heard you can hurt your neck but not heard of anyone that actually done it...tons of busted ear drums though. I've seen how painful those busted ear drums are and I've had my bell rung pretty good a few times...I might start wearing one this year after I progress a little more. Guess I won't be cool after that

| Scott a & Chubby, that fellow actually didn't break his neck. His problem was complications to a concussion which was his 2nd in a couple weeks. Concussion is a brain injury so I gotta think the helmet might have helped.

indywakechica, are you talking about helmets that cover the ear? Thats the only way I can see that would have an effect on your ear while wearing a helmet, as opposed to not wearing one. Personally, my helmet doesnt cover my ears.

i see... personally, I feel that protective ear flaps for watersports are a contradiction, since a burst eardrum is the result of an increase in pressure on one side of the eardrum in relation to the other. This can be caused by impact or even infection. In this case its the impact of the water. If you're that concerned about it, try waterproof earplugs.
On a side note, I had chronic ear infections when I was very young, and my eardrums did indeed rupture. This is not fun at all! Subsequently, I had ear tubes done twice, and was required to wear ear plugs any time I was in the water. What I'm saying is that if you feel you're in danger, try it- or more importantly, see an otologist (ear doctor), and ask for recommendations.

This absolutly has to be the dumbest thing I've read in a forum.
Last year my wife got a concusion after she caught a edge and face planted. She almost blacked out in the water and immediatly started barfing.. We were 45 miles from a hospital and we made it to the ER in 20. If we didnt have great insurence it would have cost more then 5k in hospital bills from just the ER visit and multiple MRI's. A $50 helmet would have prevented this and the 3 months of doctor mandated no riding. But she was looking real cool not wearing a helmet, barfing her lungs up in the ER & riding in the boat the rest of the season.
We wear helmets now not only to avoid a repeat but also because it doesnt hurt anywhere near as much when you wipeout. They really dont get in the way while you ride. Everone that has rode with us and tried the helmets has already bought one of their own or asks to barrow ours for their pull.

Runne,
The helmet I have has several pressure relief holes in the ear flap for that reason.
From personal experience when I catch an edge on my backside it hurts a lot less wearing one.

| Very interesting. I think that you've just got to try different helmets out and decide for yourself. Personally, I have issues with my neck since I get whiplash from catching either edge on a jump.

just to clarify a few things....
you DONT have to go big to hurt yourself. my brother has broken his ear drums 3 times, and once was on the second weekend he was wakeboarding. he rode over another boat's wake, caught some unexpected air, caught an edge and landed wrong. the third time my brother blew his ear drum, he was wearing a helmet. after that incident he got earplugs, and after he sat out most of summer, the very next time we went to ride, he forgot his helmet at home. so he rode very carefully at first, but he got impatient and tried a backroll for the first time forgetting that he wasnt wearing his helmet. he landed wrong and got a concussion, his second one acquired while wakeboarding.
-dont think you are immune to blowing eardrums when you are wearing a helmet
-dont think that just because you arent good you wont hurt yourself when you wakeboard.
ive worn the pro-tec helmet before while riding and i didnt even notice it when i was riding. when you take hard falls, your head will slow down faster in the water, making your neck sore the next day, but if you dont want a concussion, that might be the way to go.
would anyone care to explain to me what the 22mph rule is? chubby has his mind set on being a dick...

Just to clarify one more thing, you CAN get a concussion wearing a helmet. The Protec did reduce the chances of me getting a concussion many times over, but nevertheless, I did get one. I probably would've sustained more, but IMO, the helmet helped to prevent it.
Someone told me helmets causes concussions, which made absolutely no sense to me.

I'm completely for helmets, and after witnessing my uncle being hit head on and a helmet saving his life, I wont get on my motorcycle without one.
However, in this case a helmet didnt make a difference- look at the front of the dump truck. There is a helmet embedded into the grille.
