My 70's outboard speedboat is a fun toy and it'll pull, but I'm wanting to upgrade. Budget doesn't allow for a brand new tourney boat so I was wondering, would a newer I/O or an older (80's) tournament boat be better for moving to the next level? The lake we ride is really shallow along the shore, so is an I/O or a direct drive (v-drive????) better for this.
What's better for choppy water, although I usually only launch the boat if I know that I'm gonna get to ride. Thanks in advance.

HeyMadMac,

Here's my $.02 (I own an I/O)
I'd go with the older tournament boat - the hull shape is better for producing wakes. Whether it's a direct drive or v-drive it's still an inboard boat with a prop. - you don't want to be hittin' any submerged stuff. An i/o can be raised and lowered. Either hull form is what they call deep-v so it'll take the chop...

Wes

i'm with wesgardner on this one.

i got an i/o and it's nice, but it won't give you a wake like an inboard can.

80s Nautis expecialy the 2001 series throw out a sick wake at a fraction of the cost... if i were buying old like that, it would definitely be my boat of choice...

yeah dude... 80's nautique 2001a can be had for a steal, if you look around. Those babies can throw a mean wake when sacked, from what I've seen. BIGMAC put on a pimpin' cage and the boat looks better than when it was new! I'm anxious to see some pics of what his boat can do!

I have a 1993 Malibu Echelon (Black/White hull) I would let it go for 12,500. It is closed bow, has a 265hp Merc 350 Mag, Wedge, 2 outlet heater, Malibu Message Center, Depth Finder, Alpine stereo and speakers, S/A Trailer, Cover. Nice boat for little $$$. Put 2 Fat Sacks in the back, with THE WEDGE down, and you got a kick azz boardin' boat !! Shoot me an email for pics if your interested. Remeber, an old tournament boat will serve you much better than an old I/O. And hold it's value better also.

I've ridden behind old Ski Brendellas, you can get a good wake out of them. I may be wrong on this, but I heard that the Brendellas are on old M.C. hulls.

I dont know the truth to that, but I compared my 82 MC to an 83 ski brendella, and they were very similar. Both will throw usable wakes with enough weight, but not huge wakes.
