Web/Chat Line Guru's....help

I need a little help from anyone who is familiar with how forums like these operate....I have an extensive research paper due in 10 days(I tend to procrastinate) on Chat lines/forums, for a CIS course. I have to cover the inception of, how they work, and uses of them. I can handle the why people use them part but am struggling to find sources on the inception of them and their operation. I need to track down at least 3 internet references, 2 journal references and 1 book reference. Can anybody point me in the right direction to get some of these sources?

NAW, I had to do a similiar paper in my MIS classes. I remember back to the FTP days when it was similiar-but it goes way back to the Arpanet days.
