Hi, My family wants to redo our dock this winter. Right now, the surface is just wood and starting to age a little. I was wondering if anyone has found a good material to use. We really like the Brock Dock stuff but that is way too expensive

There's MANY wood alternative decking products out on the market now. Just type 'decking or deck products" in your search engine and see what pops up.

I help build my parents deck 4+years ago out of 'Trex', still looks brand new, even after parties, kids, fins, etc. It may have faded a little, but you'd only be able to tell up against a new piece. It is also easy to work with, and doesn't get extremely hot in the sun.

I use pressure treated wood... seems to last a while in the Texas heat, and w/ all the duck poop that is left on there. Shocked

Trex seems to be the new decking of choice here in New England -

How long is your dock area? Give me the specs. I own a conveyor belting company and we have some material that is about 3/16" thick and has a friction surface. It is black in color but can be painted. I wouldn't mind sending you a piece to try or maybe a sample. E-mail me @ ashmus@acronet.net if your interested.

Matt

Hey pedboydan,
As an architect I get this question alot. PT (pressure treated) wood is the ole standby as you probably know - it is what it is - cheap (relatively speaking)...most commercial piers use it for this reason and with some re-nailing and selective board replacing will last a while. There are several synthetic/composite materials such as Trex™ offering good performance at a price. Don't know if this is a float pier or fixed - certainly if it's fixed any structural timber should be PT.

Hope this helps

Wes

hey thanks for the replies guys. Yea our dock is floating and is very solid, being framed with pressure treated wood. We are just looking for a surface that will look nice and prevent splinters. All the composite plastiwood ( is that a word?) stuff is nice and I think that is what we are going to use.
