i know most of u have seen the "what kind of board should i get?" topics over and over. but i have a question.....particularly to those boarders with knee problems. what would u say is the best board for landings? ive been riding a lf trip for the past 3 years and maybe it was just me, but this summer it seemed to b landing harder and harder.

i injured my knee many years ago playing soccer and i being a moron didnt get it checked. Razz so it feels the need to act up every-now-and-then...and today was no exception. i could barely walk to and from classes.

so if you have knee trouble and ride liquid force, id really appreciate some comments on the boards you ride. hell, even if you dont ride lf, id still like to hear some options. tia Wink

*chris*, What kind of bindings do you have? I noticed a huge difference in landings when i went from '00 HL 30/60's with like a 1/4" of padding to '03 O'brien Focus bindings with around an inch of padding. Obviously if you already have bindings with thick footbeds this won't help.

A softer landing board doing anything is unlikly, even if there even is such a thing.
Get a stronger knee. Go to the gym build up your knee. It will solve most problems without a doctor visit and without surgery. I have seen it work several times.

justin h., i agree that would be a good idea instead of surgery unless the knee is really bad. Also the thought on the thicker binding footbed would maybe help.

Why muck around? Go to the doctor and get it fixed! I had arthroscopic meniscus surgery last Tuesday on my right knee and today I am already walking without crutches. The pain I have been dealing with for six months is gone. I was so careful this season not to stress the existing injury that I am sure I slowed my progression. Unless you are already on down slide of life, over 40, you should get all injuries repaired. I am 33 now. I am sure once I hit forty my plateau will change to 50 etc….

yeah i had thought of getting thicker footbeds....im riding on 2001 lf ultras. just before they switched to the thicker foam beds. Razz i dunno i should go get my knee checked, but ive never been keen on help from doctors.....but i guess thats my fault. but yeah im gonna try thicker footbeds first....should prolly take care of my problem.

Do the following in order of priority:
Try to only land wake to wake, not in the flats
Look at the opposite shore, NOT the water when landing, you won't believe how much this helps
Get thicker footbeds
Got to gym
Go to doctor

A new board is not going to make much of a difference, I was actually doing some research on knee braces before i ran into your post. I found some pretty cool ones, but the prices seem a little bit steep. Anyway my answer to your question based on my personal experience with 2 very bad knees one more than the other one is:
1) Get knee braces, they help, and its is better to wear them than to be sorry. Nevin sports makes a pretty nice one called Extreme Brace, it should be around $70.00 @ buywake.com.
2)Land on edge in the flats. Or land on the tail of the board, on the "down-ramp" of the other wake...
That's my suggestion...
Good luck.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested taking Glucosamine. It's a supplement that helps increase the amount of fluid in joints and help rebuild damaged cartilage. My doctor recommended it for an knee injury I had several years ago and after taking it for a few months I noticed that my ankle no longer hurt and both knees felt much better after snowboarding, wakeboarding, mtn biking, etc. Studies have shown that it's effective for treating arthritis in a majority of patients.

If you belong to Costco buy it there and take it for at least 3 - 6 months. Ask anyone that's tried it and they will probably highly recommend it.

Soft landing board (w/ awesome pop) = '03 or '04 Nelson

Ask Kdub, scott a, Funkster...they dig it.

*chris*, I know how you feel, I've got my ACL fixed last month for the second time. Now my rehab will take arround 6 month of doing stuff. I've got injured last april and I've ride all summer with a knee brace and still blow me knee every 2 weeks or so. I have a LF trip and I'm looking for a new board with softer landing too.

Bill... thats a very good suggestion. I've taken that for my neck and you wouldnt believe how much of a diff that makes w/ joint pains. Kinda smells funny when you take a leak, but oh well. Laughing Razz Laughing Shocked

Anyways... regarding surgery: This should be the absolute LAST thing on your list. Your doctor will tell you the same thing. Once you go into that, you need to factor in the chance of the doctor messing up- however unlikely. More importantly, you need to factor in the possibility of surgical site infection... this is more likely, and can be fatal.

If I were in your position, I would actually do the following:
1. CONSULT A DOCTOR!!
2. take glucosamine- you can pick this up at a pharmacy or GNC, or your doctor may be able to prescribe something even better.
3. strengthen your knee- weighted (very light and work your way up). Your doc can give you more specifics.
4. you might want to try turning the binding for the leg in question outwards... play with diff angles and see what works best for you.

above all DO NOT land with your leg fully extended!

Ruune - thanks for the added insight....

and everyone else for that matter. hopefully i can get a doctors appointment on friday after classes. Razz yeah my friend thinks it might be my MCL and maybe the meniscus, but thats just a guess....but he cant diagnose, hes no doctor....well pre-med. Smile thanks again guys

*chris*For Glucosamine to be effective you need to take it every day. My doctor recommended doubling the dosage for the first two weeks to 3,000mg (6 pills) and then normal dosage after that. You can find Glucosamine in several combinations such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin, or just by itself. Most of the studies were done using that combination but apparently it works just as well just by itself.

It can take 6 weeks to notice improvement, so be patient. If you had really bad knees then continue taking it for 6 months or more since the longer you take it the more it helps. Some people just keep taking it, but you can stop once you're happy with the results although my doctor suggested taking it for 3 months every year to keep the joints healthy.

Good luck!

If you're thinking of changing boards, I'd look for one that is a little narrower, and has a narrower tip. You know one with more curve in the outline. I also think that continuous rocker boards land softer, IMO. I changed from a narrow tipped board to one that was like 2 inches wider and I can definately tell the difference, but fortunately I can tell the difference on takeoff too, more pop... The other advice will make more of a difference than mine, but you asked about boards

yeah you should go to the docter but if you want a soft landing board you should get a 02 premier.

I will tell you one thing, dont get a LF Helix 139....damn thing has great pop, but the hardest landing of all the boards I have been on. It feels like my shine's are going to splinter everytime I land! CWB Absolute pLatinum and the belmonts have some smooth landings.

Maybe, but it's definitely not the High Backs! IMO, they're some of the worst bindings ever!
