Ok its official, the Oriental is not a racist trick.

Yes the term is offensive when used as an enthnonym (AKA: The name of a people or ethnic group).....if it is not being used as an enthnonym then it is not considered offensive in this case it is merely the name given to a trick.

Per the Dictionary definition of "Oriental" and its discussion of Oriental in the offensive manner:

Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.

Here is the whole section on Oriental and the offensive term:

Usage Note: Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Orientalmeaning “eastern”is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.

Here is the key line of that, thank you for proving my point.

" it is now widely taken to be offensive."

So the dictionary says it SHOULD NOT be taken as offensive, yet it is. Is the dictionary the "sensei of people's feelings"? No, it's not. So if it's widely taken to be offensive, then it's a cause for concern in a trick name.

i find the word "sensei" to be offensive. can you please remove it from your name? i realize that all people dont feel the same way as i do, but i take great offense to the word, so if you would kindly change your name that would be nice.
thank you.

scott a, this guy has 37 posts and a post rating of -73 Laugh

I have been meditating and I have come to the conclusion that the best thing for all of us to do is from this moment forward, disregard the existance of 'sensei' and ignore his posts.

I recently read the rules of these message boards, and I see that many of you are in direct violation of those. Rules are like respect. If you break the rules, your respect will be broken. Therefore, I've lost respect for some of you.

Hmmm, yes, good opints about respect. Perhaps you should adhere to them.

Respect is also earned - not given. What have you done to earn it?

Yep, they were directed at him. I can't honor him with that name though.

It needs to be earned.

First of all if these asian american (is that politically correct enough) friends of yours get pissed off at you for doing a wakeboarding trick then they are not friends and are pretty gay if you ask me. Second of all i agree with what andrew james said. White guys, wait hold on i would rather be called european american, and ridiculed just as much as anybody else. So i think everyone should just relax about name calling, they are just words.

That's not what i meant. Everyone gets ridiculed, but white people are the only people who aren't allowed to throw a fit about it.
